Spent a week trying to get my arms around 'What is KM really' This book was my savior.

I recently was assigned to do KM at work. "Start a group and figure it out...". Spent a week researching the topic just to find that KM could easily be defined as 'How to build an empire that encompasses the entire company'. Upon finding this book and reading, on other sites, the reviews, I had my company order a copy. At $60 it was quite expensive. IMHO the first chapter paid for itself. Truth be told I am only half way through reading it but so far it has been so wonderful, I have just purchased the PDF version for myself, $30 somewhere else.
I am extremely grateful this book was published just when I needed it.

You should use this at university

Designing a Successful KM Strategy: A Guide for the Knowledge Management Professional written by Stephanie Barnes and Nick Milton published by Information Today, Inc. 25 Nov. 2014 is a very easy book to read. This is because the authors are not trying to start at a too high level and but rather take you step by step, with good relevant case studies. What caught my attention is that the authors are well known and work in the industry of knowledge management, they have more than 15 years’ experience in the field and therefore this book is not just another theoretical book. The book start off with a whole chapter on what knowledge management is and why we need it. This is fantastic because it does not assume you know something about the subject though the book goes into enough detail to assist the knowledge management professional too. The authors goes on with chapter two describing the role and responsibility of the knowledge manager but expand into more than just the role of the knowledge manager by handling the general roles found in knowledge management and who would be best suited for the role. In chapter three the book shift into gear by assisting the reader to build a case for a knowledge management strategy and this is another point I really like about this book, it guide and assist the reader to build their knowledge management implementation on a knowledge management strategy in terms the business will understand. In chapter four the authors explain what the principals are or should be behind your strategy, this is the makeup of the book: it tells you what you should do and why so that the reader has a full understanding of what, how, who and why things are done. Chapters 5 – 8 delve into the strategy, how to set it up, why and who to get your input from and very importantly who to get on your side to give the knowledge management implementation the best chance to succeed. The rest of the book take the reader through the whole life cycle of knowledge management including: assessing the current state of knowledge management, defining your knowledge management framework, the technology that could be used, change management, stakeholders, implementing a pilot project, making the case for a wider implementation by using return on investment and reminds the reader to use business English and not IT or technical English and finally assist the reader to build the implementation team. It is almost impossible to highlight any one chapter as this book is well thought out and compiled in such a good way, though that said if you are interested to know what knowledge management is then read chapter one to four.
It is a shame the title state that this book is for the “Knowledge Management Professional” as it actually is for anyone interested in knowledge management not just the knowledge management professional and I would really recommend this book to my classmates as it is providing a very good foundation and overview of knowledge management, what it entails and how to implement it so that your implementation will succeed.
