This is the first book that I ever purchased related to Photography. And it was a fruitful decision.

It is well written, well composed, well explained and has lots of content in it. I've watched all of Bryan Peterson's videos on YouTube and I simply admire his works and his teaching techniques. And that made me purchase and give this book a try.

He has covered almost everything that we (as learning photographers) need to know in order to compose our shots and put an emotion/story/theme in to it. It surely opens up your mind and help you see the same things in many perspectives, helping us to make a better composition. He also talks about the uses of different lenses and their purposes and how we can use them to their best potential with creativity.

Overall I'm very pleased with this book and I highly recommend it to any photographer or photography learner how wants to enhance their skills and composition techniques. It can also be a very good gift if you are planning to give to someone!

Great introduction to taking better photographs

As with other Bryan Peterson books, "Learning to See Creatively" is a well written, easy-to-read book aimed at beginner/novice photographers. In this book, you will learn about the basics of composition and visual design and leave you with new ideas to apply to your own images. Note: if you have read other books by Peterson, you may notice some recycling of material (although if you liked those books, you're likely to enjoy this one as well).

This book starts off with a basic discussion of the characteristics of various lenses. There's a short description of how each lens type behaves followed by a few examples photographs used for illustration. The style/method of presentation in this topic is repeated throughout this book. The main text is clear and informative (focusing on just the basics) and there is a small selection of example photographs for each topic. Each photograph has a short sidebar accompanying it. These sidebars have a bit of a tendency to contain more text about the thing being photograph, rather than focusing on the relevance of that photograph to the subject. This may be a bit distracting, but not entirely unwelcome.

The next three chapters deal with 'core' compositional topics. You'll learn about elements of visual design (lines, shapes, etc), followed by basic ideas like the "rule of thirds" and "frame within a frame". A short discussion about the different characteristics about light closes out this section. Although there was not a lot of depth in these topics, there was enough material to be engaging for the beginning photographer.

To wrap up the book, there's a short chapter about digital photography, although the material is dated and particularly shallow. A chapter on 'career considerations' is last, and I found it surprising to see this chapter in a book clearly meant for beginners. Like the previous chapter, there's not a lot that would be useful here for either beginners or seasoned photographers.

Overall, this book is a good choice for someone who has just learned the basic technical aspects of photography, and is searching for ways to augment that information to take better photographs. While you won't find a lot of depth in each topic, the level of detail is appropriate for the audience, and the material presented serves as a good foundation for further study. Recommended.

Great book to read, for the enthousiast photographer.

Great book to read. Certainly for the enthousiast photographer who do not have an education in photography. The book is not full of images but it presents a descent background supported by images to show what is meant. It explains how to set up an image, sometimes followed by an out of the box" view for the real creative result.

I like that the author limits itself to what you can do with a camera, with limited post processing.

I read the book in combination with Peterson's book "Understanding Exposure". You need that book to fully understand and appreciate "Learning to See Creatively". The combination I'ld like to rate with 5 starts as the two books together give a very good and compact overview of the technology of photography, followed by the creative view.

not exactly what i expected

this book is helpful however, after each chapter is over i think of things i wish were included in each topic. I also wish there was a practice test or review test at the end or on the cd. It is an easy read. I wish it would explain thing a little better. Would only recommend this book to people who already have a firm grasp on physics and hemodynamics!

About the Author
John Coburn grew up in the Hawaiian Islands, the seventh of sixteen children. He received his Associate of Arts degree in 1977 from Windward Community College, where he graduated with honors. In 1979 he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from the University of Hawaii. After being lured into the business world for five years, he returned to his first love, accepting a teaching position in high school mathematics where he was recognized as Teacher of the Year in 1987. Soon afterward, the decision was made to seek a Masters Degree, which he received two years later from the University of Oklahoma. For the last fifteen years, he has been teaching mathematics at the Florissant Valley campus of St. Louis Community College, where he is now a full professor. During his tenure there he has received numerous nominations as an outstanding teacher by the local chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, two nominations to Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers and was recognized as Teacher of the year in 2004 by the Mathematics Educators of Greater St. Louis (MEGSL). He has made numerous presentations and local, state and national conferences on a wide variety of topics. His other loves include his family, music, athletics, games and all things beautiful, and hopes this love of life comes through in his writing, and serves to make the learning experience an interesting and engaging one for all students.

Here's the bad news: "Golf," suggests the great Bobby Jones, the largest shadow ever cast on a fairway, "is the one game which becomes more and more difficult the longer one plays it." Here's the good news: If his classic instructional can't change the diagnosis, it may at least ease the pain. Written by the master himself--no ghost ever stepped between Jones and his ball--as a series of twice-weekly newspaper columns between 1927 and 1935, the collection of tips and ideas moves from the simple ("Nobody ever swung a golf club too slowly") to the complex ("The art of appraising slope and speed--that is, of reading a green, can be derived only from experience"), the physical to the mental, the obvious to the arcane, and is penned with an elegance as smooth and fluid as Jones' liquid swing. Some of it, especially to golf's newcomers, will seem out of date--the game has changed much through the years--but that's OK; this is a book to savor as much as learn from. It's biggest drawback is its lack of illustrations, but the recent uncovering of a cache of unpublished photographs and tips--available in Jones' Classic Instruction--repairs that divot. Indeed, taken together, Jones' On Golf and Classic Instruction should cure several Royal and Ancient disorders. --Jeff Silverman

The Holy Grail of Golf Books

One of my biggest regrets in life is that I never got to see Bobby Jones play tournament golf. He retired from the game early, too early for a man of his immense talent; and a few years before I traveled across the country to see tournament play.
I can only go by his unmatched amateur record and old grainy 16-millimeter film stock to grasp the greatness of Bobby Jones. Jones had a great swing...Very controlled, impeccable balance/ coordination, unbelievable tempo and rhythm. Pure ballstriking. Pure golf.
In his book, "Bobby Jones on Golf", Jones really gets to the spirit of the game. This is a great book on the idiosyncrasies, nuances, technicalities, and philosophies of the game of golf. If you read carefully and take his advice seriously, I believe you will become a better player. I can't guarantee this, but there is no reason why a beginner can't shoot in the 80's within the first year of playing. If you do the reading and practice the fundamentals; after 3 years of playing on a regular basis (at least 3 to 4 times a week) you should be shooting in the 70's.
This book is a very easy and compelling read. I think you will really enjoy Jone's prose. It's Jone's prose that makes this an enjoyable reading experience. It's by no means flowery or pretentious, but understated and distinguished. Much like reading a Jane Austen novel; it feels like Jones is actually speaking directly to you. And this is the best way to learn about something very complicated; to have the narrator / author personalize his language by using parables, analogies, and personal stories to make it easier for the reader to understand the complicated material.
Another important note: There are hardly any illustrations and no photographs in this book. There doesn't need to be either because Jones does such a great job in his explantions that his words paint pictures. I was glad that he didn't have to resort to any photos; it would have distracted from his impeccable teachings.
I highly recommend this book whether you're a beginner, intermediate, or advanced player. Not only will you learn from a golfing master, but you will have a new appreciation for the greatest game on earth. Along with this book, I also recommend the reading of Ben Hogan's, "Five Lessons: The Modern Fundamentals of Golf", Mickey Wright's "Swing the Wright Way", and Harvey Penick's, "The Little Red Book".

Bobby Jones on Golf

"A golf swing is graceful, not because it is made so, but because it is correct." Only Bobby Jones offers nearly poetic writing while tackling the ever so complex act of striking a golf ball, and playing the game.
Mr. Jones' book is without a doubt the best about playing the game of golf. Ben Hogan's Modern Fundamentals is a close second. The difference? Mr. Jones discusses the game. Mr. Hogan discusses the swing.
Beginners and high-handicappers should chuck all their golf magazines and golf-tip books. These only bring about tension and poor results. Bobby Jones on Golf will raise any interested reader's game to a level that goes beyond how many knuckels should be visible or the position of the pinky toe; all this while using the english language as well as he used his mashie.
A must read if you want to be a competitive golfer.

One of the Best Golf Books Ever Written

Where to start? Maybe its Jones' Harvard-educated background combined with his Southern gentleman quality that melds into a style of writing that is unmatched in over 100 years of writings in golf instruction. His conveyance of somewhat technical aspects of the game in an economy of words is astounding, and after reading the book probably 4 times now, I see new instances of incredible use of language with each reading. Here is an example of Jones' use of language - this from the first chapter: "The great fault in the average golfer's conception of his stroke is that he considers the shaft of the club a means of transmitting actual physical force to the ball, whereas it is in reality merely the means of imparting velocity to the clubhead... I like to think of a golf club as a weight attached to my hands by an imponderable medium, to which a string is a close approximation, and I like to feel that I am throwing it at the ball with much the same motion I should use in cracking a whip." Economy of words and language that it so beautiful to read.

Jones' teaching methods are quite unlike most used today. He does not focus on positional teaching; rather, he focuses his efforts on more feel and movement - he conceives the golf swing as a movement. His beliefs include: 1) a totally relaxed grip and setup - this is paramount as any tension destroys the golf swing; 2) use of the lower body (much like Percy Boomer) to start and generate the swing; 3) use of the left hip and foot to start the downswing - Jones calls this the most important move in golf; 4) the golf swing should be conceived as one motion - not an upswing and a downswing; 5) swing the clubhead, as in the Ernest Jones' book of the same name.

Jones still does not get the recognition he deserves. Many consider him one of golf's greatest, but his Grand Slam completed in 1930 still goes down, in most knowledgeable sportswriters, as the greatest accomplishment in the history of sport. Were Jones to play today, there is no question that he would be as dominant a player today, as he was in his era. Computer analysis of his swing showed a hickory-shafted 42 inch driver, travelling at 119 MPH of clubhead speed at impact, faster than 70% of todays' touring pros. Mickelson, Toms, et al have won majors while Tiger was around, yet even the great Walter Hagen never won when Bob Jones played in the same major championship.

Buy this book, put it on your shelf, read it once every few years and marvel at it simple ability to convey the golf swing, while taking you back to the days of great language in sport.

In fifth grade my English teacher, Ms. Berg, was teaching about autobiographies and had us each write our life story on a single page of lined paper. I’m not sure which is more pathetic:

(a) That Ms. Berg thought our lives could be summed up on one page, or

(b) I could fill only half the page.

Let’s face it, in fifth grade you’re still kind of waiting for life to begin. Yeah, some of the kids had done cool things, like one had gone skydiving; another had been to Japan; and one girl’s father was a plumber and she got to be in her dad’s TV commercial waving a plunger, so she’s kind of famous—but that’s about as cool as it got. All I remember is that my autobiography was super lame. It went something like:

My name is Michael Vey, and I’m from a town you’ve never heard of—Meridian, Idaho. My father died when I was eight, and my mother and I have moved around a lot since then. I like to play video games. Also, I have Tourette’s syndrome. I’m not trying to be funny, I really do.

You probably know that Tourette’s makes some of us swear a lot, which would have made my story more interesting, or maybe got it banned, but I don’t swear with my Tourette’s. In my case, Tourette’s just means I have a lot of tics, like I blink, gulp, make faces, stuff like that. That’s about it. As far as life stories go, no one’s called to buy the movie rights.

They might if they knew my secret—the secret I’ve hidden for most of my life and the reason my mom and I keep having to move.

I’m electric. So are you, of course. That’s how your brain and muscles work. But the thing is, I have probably a thousand times more electricity than you. And it seems to be growing stronger. Have you ever rubbed your feet on a carpet, then shocked someone? Multiply that by a thousand and you’ll get an idea of what it’s like to be me. Or shocked by me. Fortunately, I’ve learned to control it.

I’m fifteen years old now and a lot has happened since the fifth grade. I kind of wish someone would ask me to write my life story now, because it would make a good movie. And it would take up way more than one page. This is how it would go:

My name is Michael Vey, and I’m more electric than an electric eel. I always thought I was the only one in the world like me, but I’m not. I just found out that there were originally seventeen of us. And the people who made us this way, the Elgen, are hunting us down. You might say we were an accident. The Elgen Corporation created a machine called the MEI (short for Magnetic Electron Induction), to be used for finding diseases and abnormalities in the body. Instead it created abnormalities—us.

My girlfriend, the way-out-of-my-league cheerleader with perfect brown eyes, Taylor Ridley, is also electric. I can shock people (I call it “pulsing”), but she can shock people’s brains and make them forget what they were doing (she calls it “rebooting”). She can also read minds, but she has to touch you to do it.

One month ago the Elgen, led by a scary dude named Dr. Hatch, found us. They kidnapped Taylor and tried to get me, too, but ended up with my mother instead. A few days later I went to California with my best friend, Ostin Liss (he and I live in the same apartment building, and he’s one of the few people who knows about my powers), and a couple of kids from my school, Jack and Wade, to save Taylor and my mother.

Things didn’t go so well. In the first place, Taylor was there but my mother wasn’t. Then we got caught. Jack and Wade were forced to be GPs, which is short for human guinea pigs, the name the Elgen give their prisoners they experiment on. Ostin and I were locked up too, though I was put in Cell 25, the place they put people to break their minds.

I managed to escape and rescue my friends. I was also able to rescue four of the other electric kids: Zeus, Ian, McKenna, and Abigail. They have some pretty cool powers too. Zeus can shoot lightning bolts, which is why he’s named after the Greek god. (But he can’t touch water without shocking himself, so he doesn’t bathe much—actually, never—so he kind of smells.)

Ian’s blind but he can see way better than any of us. He sees the same way sharks and electric eels do, through electrolocation—which means he can see things that are miles away, even through walls.

McKenna can create light and heat from any part of her body.

Abigail can take away pain by electrically stimulating nerve endings.

We also rescued Grace. She was one of the electric kids who were loyal to Hatch (who calls us Glows). I don’t know much about her other than that she can download things from computers and she downloaded all the information from the Elgen’s mainframe before we escaped. We’re hoping she has information on where the Elgen have taken my mother.

There are ten of us now (including our nonelectric friends Ostin, Jack, and Wade). We call ourselves the Electroclan.

There’s one more thing I would put in my autobiography, something that scares me but would make my story more interesting. I don’t know for sure, but I may be dying. Hatch told me that four of the electric children have already died of cancer caused by their electricity—and I have more electricity than any of them. I don’t know if it’s true because Hatch is a liar. I guess time will tell. In the meanwhile we’re headed back to my home in Meridian, Idaho, to figure out where my mother is and plan our next move.

Like I said, I think my story would make a pretty good movie so far. Maybe it will be one day. But not yet, because it’s not even close to being over. And I have a feeling that things are about to get a whole lot wilder.

Great book. Daughter states it's "even better than first"

I didn't buy this from Amazon, though I usually buy all my books here. I got this book for my daughter at Restoring Love a few weeks before it came out. We waited in line hours to have it signed by Richard Paul Evans. He was great. However, the book it itself is wonderful. My child, who hates reading, wouldn't put it down. She read it all within a day and we had to MAKE her take breaks. I would recommend this book to anyone with children between the ages of 9 or 10 and 16 to 17.

Loved it! How long do I have to wait for book 3?!?!

I checked the kindle app on my tablet last night at around 11:30pm and was excited to see Michael Vey 2 start downloading. I began reading immediately and finished the novel around 3:45 this morning... Yep, it was gripping, well-paced and exciting.

I won't issue any spoilers, but I highly recommend this novel to adults (I'm 34) and adolescents alike for a few specific reasons. First, it is well-written and enjoyable as a work of fiction. Second, the heroes are truly heroic as a result of the choices they make not simply because they have powers. In fact some of the most heroic choices are made by those with no powers. And finally, who hasn't imagined what it would be like to have superpowers and punch Nazis (I mean Elgen) in the face!

Well done Richard Paul Evans! I want more!!

Richard Paul Evans does not dissapoint with this new book! It is a fast read and hard to put down just like the first one! I loved the characters, various storylines going on that kept you guessing and unable to put the book or Kindle down! Yay for Michael Vey #2, hoping #3 comes out soon!

But while Monet the painter was faithful and persevering in the pursuit of his motifs, his personal life - characterized by frequent travels and changes of location -- followed a more restless course. Parisian by birth, he discovered plein-air painting as a youth in the provinces and sought to defy his family's insistence upon an academic painter's training. For over half his life the artist was plagued by financial worries, which in part precipitated the frequent moves made by his expanding household. Two of his homes stand out above the rest. The first, Argenteuil, has come to represent the artistic flowering and official establishment of Impressionism as a movement, with Monet as its creative leader. But it was also Monet who, in his endeavour to capture the ever-changing face of reality, went beyond Impressionism and thereby beyond the confines of the self-contained panel painting. This step he took in the village of Giverny: here he painted the Poplars, Grain Stacks and Rouen Cathedral series in which he addressed one motif in constantly new variations. Here, too, Monet laid out the famous garden with its water lily pond which he was to paint on huge canvases well into the 1920s. He thereby sought to render not reality as objectively experienced, but rather that which takes place 'between the motif and the artist'. In their open, nolonger more than tenuously representational structure and impressive scale, his water lily paintings - created long before the currents of the contemporary avant-garde-point the way forward to the developments of the future.

Karin Sagner-Duchting, born in Erlabrunn-Steinheldel, studied art history, new German literature and classical archaeology at Munich University. She gained her doctorate in 1983 with a thesis on Claude Monet's water lily paintings (Hildeshelm 1985). Academic assistant at the Bayerische Staatsgemaldesammlungen until 1988.

There are better books on Monet

Fully illustrated, but the reproductions are dark and to the brown/orangey side. The text is adequate, but nothing new to anyone who knows Monet. To someone new to the subject it gives an overview of Monet's life and work.

I recommend the following books for a more in depth study of his work and more accurate color in the illustrations:

"Monet, Nature into Art", John House.

"Claude Monet 1840 - 1926", Charles F. Stuckey (Catalog for Art Institute of Chicago Retrospective).

"Monet in the 90's, the Series Painting", Paul Hayes Tucker.

The book presents a nice sample of the artist's work

I agree with the previous reviewer who notes the darkness of the color in the reproductions as a negative. However, that is why I gave 4 - instead of 5 stars. There has never been a Monet reproduction that does the original justice. The book presents a nice sample of the artist's work. However, I do wish there were more pieces from Monet's stay in Holland, particularly, his paintings from Amsterdam.
The text is a light, quick, and informative read, and is well served by the large hardcover format. It gives a quick and accurate overview of the artist's life.
