The most beautiful knitting book in the world

This book is a work of art, with stunning photographs of beautifully executed knitting patterns made by true masters of knitting in Estonia, and of real people (not models) wearing these shawls. Within seconds of seeing the book in my local yarn shop (at a lower price, by the way), I decided to buy it. I have perused my copy from cover to cover and am using it for a project and unfortunately have dropped it on the floor so many times that I have ordered a second copy to sit safely in my bookshelves. My current copy will now happily be a working copy, and I really mean that as there are so many shawls that I'll want to make. The patterns are really easy to read even though the symbols are different from what is typical in the US. I have grown to like them better than what we use here. The patterns also contain not only the basic motif to be repeated, but also stitches added to the beginning and ending of the repeat to make the edges of the patterns symmetrical/mirror images. A contemporaneous Estonian pattern book published in the US does not do that, and the difference is truly noticeable once you see the beautiful patterns in this book. The construction instructions are detailed enough that I should have no problem finishing my shawl once the center section and border are knitted. Although the price may seem high, it is truly a bargain given the sheer beauty of the book and the fact that there are well over 100 designs. I can't say enough good about this book!

What a wonderful book! The lace patterns are exquisite, beautifully photographed and the charting clear and easily understandable. Instructions for creating your own shawl or scarf are straightforward. I can't wait to start designing! Definitely worth the money.

True to tradition, with clear, beautiful instructions

I bought this book because I have a friend who has a strong connection to her Estonian heritage and I wanted to knit from it for her. We spent an hour looking over it and she was delighted to see so many motifs and patterns that she'd seen in needlework done by the women in her family and community. Each stitch pattern is provided with a knitting chart, the charts are very clear and easy to read. I am going to enjoy making beautiful lace in the Estonian tradition.

PASS THROUGH PANIC is a compilation of eight radio lectures copyrighted in 1967 by the late Australian panic expert Claire Weekes. Her main points are valid enough--that fear and anxiety can be exaggerated reactions to stress and that a lot of emotional and physical illness is due to ignorance about people's normal stress responses. But the author's delivery has an authoritarian tone, and the content obviously doesn't benefit from the psychiatric and psychological advances that have been made in the past thirty years. Highly recommend!

I have suffered moderate to severe anxiety and panic disorders for 25 years and anxiety runs in my family. I have tried everything (psychotherapy, medication (I can't tolerate), Joe Barry's Panic Away, Lucinda Bassit's Attacking Anxiety and Depression, naturopathy, vitamins, etc.) I wish I had found this CD years ago. While I believe that biochemical and lifestyle interventions such as vitamins, fish oil, exercise, religious practices, etc. have been crucial to my healing, I know that this CD has been able to handle all the built us mental struggle that I have had (fear of the fear) from these many years of anxiety. I have since bought two of her books, but I must say, this CD is the best treatment to panic attacks that I've ever used. I consider myself "practicing" healed (she explains this on the CD). This CD is so superior to her books that I recommend it as a MUST. If you can only afford either the CD or the books, please get the CD. Her voice is amazing--several times a day I now "hear" her voice in my head advising me, calming me and encouraging me to go on. I haven't had a panic attack since ordering and listening to this CD and now I KNOW I can deal with one if I got one--essentially I'm getting over the highly sensitized state (as she calls it) and getting over the "fear of the fear" and am now able to do things with significantly less anxiety and fear than before this CD. I'm still "practicing" and believe that may be for the rest of my lifetime, but I am very different. I have a new set of skills to get over these fears. I have a different confidence and am excited to try things that made me nervous before because I now have the skill to deal with any ensuing panic. I did not believe this CD would alter my life so thoroughly for the better. It has been about 2 months since I bought the CD and things have only improved weekly. I'm not even nervous about the panic coming back (if it does) because she teaches techniques for dealing with that too. She removes the fear of fear from the listener!

Her basic theory is that you must change your thoughts about how you perceive everything that makes you nervous/panicky. I know that anxiety sufferers have heard that before--but her system is different. It is similar from Joe Barry's method, but his method continued to have you "fight" the fear. There is no fighting the fear with this program. I can do it no justice myself, but she basicly gives you the ability to transform your thinking about panic: be more accepting of yourself (think of it as "practicing" instead of "doing"; letting things "wash over you and accepting them" instead of fighting the fear/panic. And, essentially these less hightened reactions to fearful activities will "desentize" your already "sensitized" system.

Please, if you have suffered panic or agoraphobia or fear, please please don't hesitate to try this CD. It is not a wacky new age thing--it has sound principles that really work. As I stated earlier, I only wish I had found this sooner.

These CDs saved me

I had anxiety for 5 years. It just kept getting worse and worse. I found these CDs along with Dr. Weekes book "Hope and Help for Your Nerves". Best thing I ever did. I tried several different anxiety meds, different diets, meditation, counseling, exercise, all in an effort to get rid of the anxiety. Dr. Weekes information was the ticket to help me. She explains in very plain language how the adrenal glands can be triggered by stress of some sort and kick into overdrive and begin misfiring when it's really not needed. She also explains exactly how anxiety has a very specific pattern it follows in the body, and then she goes through some information on how we can change our response to the anxiety and eventually it gets less and less then goes away. It's now been about 1.5 years since I first read her book, and I can definitively say I am anxiety free except for the few occasions when I am overtired. But when I catch back up on my sleep, it goes away. I could not have beat the anxiety without Dr. Weekes information. I listened to the CDs over and over, until I had them memorized, then when I felt the anxiety coming on, I would hear her voice in my head, describing what I was feeling, and what I needed to do about it. It was a slow process, like I said 1.5 years, but it was well worth it. I do think it would have gone quicker if I hadn't also been dealing with weaning myself off anxiety meds over the last year.

I recommend this for anyone dealing with panic attacks

I recommend this for anyone dealing with panic attacks, anxiety, or agoraphobia. I like Lucinda Bassett quite a bit, but Claire has a much different style that some like better. I listened to both women because I wanted to learn everything I possibly could about anxiety disorders - and a few years later, I am quite a bit better (I had panic attacks and general anxiety). I had a bit of an adjustment period getting used to Claire because of her strong Australian accent, but I found her to be positive and comforting in no time at all.

Must Have Reference

My Personal Background: I have studied Korean in the Military and at the College level. Native language is English with no Korean background.

Problems:
You need to be comfortable with English grammar. Hopefully you have also spent at least an academic year/year learning Korean. While this book will tell you how to use subject and object markers (and a ton of other particles) if you have no concept of a subject marker, this book will seem like a bunch of grammatical mumble jumble.

This grammar book is not only esoteric (linguistic terms) and obscure, but it also uses sample sentences with the word "booz," drunken state of being, and other unprofessional habits. Tables do not label or display different tenses of the verbs, and the table titles are not even written in English. The author must have been on booz when he selected examples. A pocket guide with tables and patterns would be more helpful than the crazy examples and unclear grammar in this book! This book is not useful for international learners who are attempting to learn the Korean language and make sense out of the grammar. In fact, this book is not even good for any learners.

About the Author
STEWART HAMILTON has been Professor of Accounting and Finance at IMD, Switzerland since 1981. A graduate of the University of Edinburgh, UK, he is a member of the Institutes of Chartered Accountants of Scotland, of Alberta and of Ontario. Formerly a senior partner of a UK national accounting firm, he has extensive consulting experience with a wide range of major European companies. He has contributed to many books and other publications and has written prize winning cases on the failures of Barings and Enron.

ALICIA MICKLETHWAIT is a Graduate of the University of Oxford, a member of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and has an MBA from IMD. She has held accounting and commercial positions in industry and worked as a member of the acquisition and internal audit team of an American owned multinational. She co-wrote the prize winning case study of the collapse of Barings Bank.

After a discussion of the symptoms of BPD, the authors review all the generalist treatment interventions that have resulted in good outcomes in randomised controlled trials, when compared with specialist treatments, and summarise the effective components of these interventions. The treatment strategies are organised into a structured approach called Structured Clinical Management (SCM), which can be delivered by general mental health professionals without extensive additional training.

The heart of the book outlines the principles underpinning SCM and offers a step-by-step guide to the clinical intervention. Practitioners can learn the interventions easily and develop more confidence in treating people with BPD. In addition, a chapter is devoted to how to help families - an issuecommonly neglected when treating patients with BPD. Finally the authors discuss the top 10 strategies for delivering treatment and outline how the general mental health clinician can deliver these strategies competently.

Anthony W. Bateman, Consultant Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist, Barnet, Enfield, and Haringey Mental Health NHS Trust, Visiting Professor University College, London and Consultant Anna Freud Centre, London, UK,Roy Krawitz, Consultant Psychiatrist and DBT therapist, Waikato District Health Board, and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer, Auckland University, New Zealand

Anthony W. Bateman is Consultant Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist, Halliwick Unit, Barnet, Enfield, and Haringey Mental Health Trust, Visiting Professor University College, London and Consultant to the Anna Freud Centre, London. He developed mentalization based treatment with Peter Fonagy for borderline personality disorder and studied its effectiveness in research trials. An adapted version is now being used in other psychiatric disorders and in the treatment of families and adolescents. He was an expert member of National Institute for Clinical Excellence (NICE) development group for treatment guidelines for Borderline Personality Disorder in UK. He is President of the European Society for the Study of Personality Disorders (ESSPD).

He has authored several books including 'Psychotherapy for Borderline Personality Disorder: Mentalization based treatment' and 'Mentalization Based Treatment for Borderline Personality Disorder: A practical guide' (with Peter Fonagy).

Roy Krawitz is a psychiatrist and Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer (Auckland University) specializing for the last 20 years in working with people with borderline personality disorder (BPD), and is a director and trainer of a company providing DBT training. Though this book is written for clinicians, it is very helpful and easily readable for family members. It is compassionate, clear in the explanations of the symptoms and treatment of BPD, and the comments from people with BPD and those who are their carers add much to the understanding of this illness. As a mother of someone with BPD I especially appreciate the fact that there is no criticism or blame of parents having caused the illness, rather an explanation of "poorness of fit" of parenting a child with BPD. There is an excellent handout for carers, which, with permission from the authors, can be made available to carers on how they can help their family member.
Highly recommended for all involved with BPD.

A great review, extremely useful for all health care providers who, per the nature of their work will encounter these patients. A book that provide all of us with tools to better manage, be less afraid and be more compassionate towards so many whose sufferings can so improve when offered the right approach and tools.

You'll lear a lot, but it's old information.

It's easy to read, and you'll learn a lot from reading it. I took a star off because the material is outdated. I would get a newer version, but it was required by my professor. Therefore it doesn't take into account the recent depression and our current recovery from it. My professor is probably right in saying that no current text will accurately depict what has happened and why it has happened yet.

Top notch Textbook

Stiglitz is one of those rare economists who has a great research record and writes extremely well. This book is a very good guide to Public Economics, both for the beginner and more advanced student. The amount of material in it is incredible and my class only got through about half of it. The sections on tax policy are especially enlightening.

I rented the book because I needed it for class. The book made information more clear to understand. The only thing that i would say I didn't like was that I couldn't buy the book for future use, due to how much it cost and I had other books to get.
