solid book
By J. C. Morris
Since modern physics is hardly modern anymore, most of the important topics were developed 100 years ago, so it doesn't matter that the book is 11 years old. the best part is the lack of bright colors, useless notes on the side of the page, confusing layouts- all of which add unnecessary cost to already expensive textbooks. Furthermore, if you compare to other books, the problems are generally better, with similar treatment of main concepts.

The book does suffer from the common problem of the first two chapters being mostly an historical review of concepts from 100 level physics.

Some good, but some bad too
By Jeremy Scheff
The good is that this book does not overwhelm you with flashy pictures like a lot of Physics books do. However, the book loses 2 stars for too many typos. It seemed like every week I would get an email from my professor with corrections to the problems. I'm docking it another star for some sections which I think could have been explained better. The chapter on semiconducters was not very englightening. I had to read another book before I felt comfortable with the material.

If they ever make another edition of this book, I'm sure it will be great, but this one is just a little too rough around the edges.

You can learn modern physics
By Vahit Sametoglu
This is really a good book. You can learn the fundamentals of modern physics comfortably. The discussions are well-presented and well-organized. The worked-out problems within chapters are especially useful, so allot ample time to study them. When I was using this book, there were a few typos, but I am sure the author must have corrected them. Some of the end-of-chapter problems may sound weird, they need some revision. Also, try not to use a calculator while solving the in-chapter problems, you can really improve your math skills.

Monkeys On Our Backs: Why Conservatives and Liberals Are Both Wrong About Evolution, by Richard Tokumei

The current debate on how to overhaul the American health care system assumes that a healthy society depends on good medical care. So it may come as a shock to learn that controversially medical care does not make a society healthier and actually does just the opposite! Like the Freakonomics books Monkeys examines common issues in uncommon ways and discusses the unexpected unintended and even paradoxical consequences of various social policies. As the title indicates this book attempts to show how ironic it is that the proposed social policies of the Left are in conflict with evolution and how the beliefs of the Right are not so different from what evolution teaches us about how life and societies evolve. Monkeys on Our Backs may cause controversy or even rage but it is sure to be read and discussed.

Review
Tokumei's book is a provocative study of the debate over the moral and political implications of Darwinian science. (Larry Arnhart, Presidential Research Professor of Political Science, Northern Illinois University, author of Darwinian Conservatism) Richard Tokumei asks all the right questions and as far as I am concerned provides all the right answers. At the very least his book should serve to remind us that these days there is nothing so rare as common sense. (Burt Prelutsky, Author of Liberals: America's Termites)

A Fine Primer on Evolution for Conservatives and Why They Need to Accept It
By John Kwok
I must disagree vehemently - but also respectfully - with my friend Greg Laden, a physical anthropologist who espouses a political point of view radically different than mine, since I regard "Monkeys on Our Backs" as a fine political polemic written to persuade fellow Conservatives as to why biological evolution should be accepted as valid science, and why Darwinian thought is politically more consistent with their political worldview than it is with liberals. It is not a book on science, nor is it meant to be, as both author Richard Tokumei and evolutionary psychologist Satoshi Kanazawa emphasize in its introductory sections (Tokumei, who had this published under this pseudonym, does identify himself as a Conservative Democrat who believes his party has betrayed the very principles which President John F. Kennedy represented with regards to both foreign policy and economics). However, I will note that the chapter devoted to describing how Natural Selection works "A Short Summary of How Evolution Works" is an especially lucid introduction whose only glaring omission is noting how much Darwin was influenced by Adam Smith's thinking on free market economics (A point which another Conservative thinker, noted skeptic Michael Shermer, does emphasize in his "Why Darwin Matters: The Case Against Intelligent Design".). Another notable success is Tokumei's insistence that Darwinian thought does not promote amoral - or immoral - behavior, as many Conservatives, especially those within the Religious Right, might contend, but instead, argues persuasively that "...evolution has allowed us to evolve both the ability and the propensity to seek moral codes and also certain aspects of those moral codes that allow us to live peacefully and altruistically in society with others." Tokumei also succeeds in explaining how Conservative beliefs are substantially more consistent than those of Liberals with evolution from a strong selectionist view, and by that, I do mean that Natural Selection is seen as the primary mechanism responsible for biological evolution. For these reasons "Monkey on Our Backs" is worthy of a wide readership, especially by fellow Conservatives; it is of sufficient brevity that it should be of interest even to prominent Conservative critics of evolution like Ann Coulter and Michele Bachmann.

Nothing new here
By Barbara Mcauliffe
I expected more from this. I thought that with all the work done on the human genome recently, he would make some mention of it. But no. What we get is really just some random musings of some guy, and frankly, I could get that in any bar in the country if I wanted to waste my time.

Although it may not sound like it, I actually agree with everything the author says. The problem as I see it is that he never addresses why the Left doesn't have any idea what evolution is all about. I think the answer is that evolution is often spoken of as "this happened in order to do that", like....the eye developed in order to see. Whereas the truth is, something (a proto-eye) developed and, happy accident, the creature that possessed it was able to find more food. This way of thinking leads people to thing that evolution is heading somewhere: a fairer world, a world without violence or whatnot. In fact evolution just wants lots of babies.

I wouldn't bother with this, if you are interested in evolution, you won't learn a thing.

It is no wonder that the author chose to use a pseudonym
By Gregory T. Laden
Richard Tokumei has written a book that is so bad he is ashamed to put his own name on it. "Richard Tokumei" is the pen name of a 'writer/editor in Southern California [with] degrees in Humanities and Phychology from the University of California Berkeley" and he has produced a book designed to anger everyone who hears of it in order to create needless sensation and thus, sell copies. Which, once people get their hands on, will make rather low quality toilet paper.

Monkeys On Our Backs: Why Conservatives and Liberals Are Both Wrong About Evolution includes an inexplicable mix of "correct" statements about evolution and how to think about evolution along with misuses, abuses, and misunderstandings of evolution that those very statements guard against. "Tokumei" warns against the naturalistic fallacy, but uses it as the basis for his arguments whenever convenient. He repeats statements made by evolutionary biologists that make it clear that evolution is not teleological or goal directed, but assumes it is, and requires goal directness for important parts of his arguments to work. He presents the entirety of evolutionary or biological models, research, discussion, and data regarding human behavior as a simplified and naive "Pinkeresque" view, and this allows him to indicate why liberals hate Evolution. He also presents evolution, or more accurately, Darwinism, using the exact model pushed these days by the Discovery Institute as a straw man for disdain by conservatives. "Tokumei" makes the very annoying statement that Evolution is pretty easy to understand and then proceeds to misunderstand, sometimes willfully sometimes not, it would appear, the process. He hates socialism with utter disdain and never fails to link the term with Liberal policies and 'prove' that these policies are evil. Despite the thinly veiled attempt to paint this book as an even-handed fact-based critique of both the left and the right, it is only an attack on the left, with the critique of the right having little more strength than a piece of used toilet paper left to languish in an unflushed toilet. Which is where this book belongs.

I didn't like it.

But Satoshi Kanazawa did, I assume, because he wrote the forward! Go figure!

In case you are wondering, Tokumei has very few anagrams. Try letter substitution if you want to identify him that way. Waste of time, though. Off hand, the following results could signify: Andrews, Baldwin, Bismark, and Codfish. The book appears to be self published.

Waking and the Reticular Activating System in Health and Disease, by Edgar Garcia-Rill

Waking and the Reticular Activating System in Health and Disease provides a comprehensive overview on the “activating” properties of the RAS. In health, the RAS provides the basis against which we assess the external world, and in disease it distorts that world and shatters our self-image. This book describes the physiology of each process, how it is disturbed in each disorder, and what the most appropriate treatment should be.

Dr. Garcia-Rill, along with contributions from leading specialists, discusses the understanding of the RAS as a system not only modulating waking, but also in charge of survival mechanisms such as fight vs flight responses and reflexes. The full spectrum of these functions helps explain the complexity of symptoms evident in such disorders as disparate as schizophrenia and Parkinson’s disease. The book reviews the mechanisms that control waking and arousal, and especially how those mechanisms malfunction in certain neurological and psychiatric disorders.

  • First comprehensive overview on the RAS and its role in schizophrenia, major depression, autism, Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and other neurologic and mental diseases
  • Offers a new way of thinking about brain function and the role of the RAS in our waking lives
  • Written by a leading translational neuroscience researcher with contributions by specialists in the field

Editorial from Journal of Sleep Science by dr. S. Datta.
By Edgar Garcia-Rill
This issue of Sleep Science contains two excellent review articles by Garcia-Rill and his colleagues examining the role of reticular activating system, especially the pedunculopon- tine (PPT) nucleus, in the pathophysiology of insomnia, schizophrenia, and other neuropsychiatric disorders. The PPT nucleus is one of the major aggregations of cholinergic neurons in the mammalian brainstem capable of synthesizing acetylcholine, but also other neurotransmitters and peptides. In addition, PPT cholinergic cells also synthesize a gaseous neuromodulator, nitric oxide. Interest- ingly, cells in the PPT are involved in regulation of both wakefulness and REM sleep.
About 10 years ago, the Garcia-Rill lab reported for the first time the presence of electrical coupling through gap junc- tions of some cells in each of three major elements of the arousal system, including the PPT. This discovery helped explain how gap junction blockers like halothane and propo- fol can put us to sleep so rapidly. A year later, his lab resolved a 20-year mystery, the mechanism of action of the stimulant modafinil used in the treatment of narcolepsy. Modafinil was found to increase electrical coupling and coherence of cell activity in the same centers found to manifest electrical coupling, increasing arousal. All of these breakthroughs are addressed in review articles from Garcia-Rill lab appear- ing in this issue of Sleep Science. However, these major contributions are only the tip of the iceberg.
About 5 years ago, Garcia-Rill first reported the presence of gamma band activity in these arousal-related centers, sug- gesting that this system generates its own high frequency activity. They went on to show that this activity was mediated by intrinsic membrane oscillations due to the presence of high threshold voltage-dependent N- and P/Q- type calcium channels. This year, they found that a protein over expressed in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder blocks the manifestation of gamma band activity in the PPT. They also showed that one of the mechanisms by which lithium has a therapeutic effect is because it blocks the over expressing protein to allow the maintenance of gamma band activity, which is reduced in these disorders. So much for the 60-year mystery of the action of lithium. These findings are described in his Sleep Science review on schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, which are characterized by serious sleep- wake disturbances.
Also this year, the Garcia-Rill group reported the presence in the PPT of different populations of cells with only N-type, only P/Q-type, or both N- and P/Q-type calcium channels. These populations may correspond to in vivo studies show- ing “REM-on”, “Wake-on” and “Wake/REM-on” cells, respec- tively, resolving a 30-year mystery. This segregation suggests that waking and REM sleep are controlled by two separate intracellular pathways, which we investigated for many years. This discovery implies that the gamma band activity observed during waking is different from that seen during REM sleep. In his Sleep Science review on insomnia, Garcia-Rill proposes a novel mechanism for this disorder (excessive waking due to increased expression or activity in the CaMKII-P/Q-type channel system). This imaginative proposal provides excellent new therapeutic targets for this difficult to treat condition.
In addition, Garcia-Rill provides preliminary data for the mechanism behind the developmental decrease in REM sleep (decreased expression of N-type calcium channels mediating REM sleep across development), resolving a 50-year mystery. They also suggest a mechanism behind the basic rest-activity cycle (BRAC) (alternation of CaMKII-P/Q-type channel waking- like gamma band activity with cAMP/PK-N-type channel REM sleep-like gamma band activity). I would not bet against this theory in resolving this 75-year mystery.
A new book entitled, “Waking and the Reticular Activating System” outlines his work over 40 years on locomotion, arousal, and waking, and is peppered with innovative ideas, solutions, and suggestions. In fact, one reason Garcia-Rill became interested in the PPT was due to his studies in the 1980 s and 1990 s on the mesencephalic locomotor region. This work led to a series of discoveries related to spinal cord injury, including investigations reducing hyper-reflexia after spinal cord injury using passive exercise, and the descending pathways mediating changes in postural muscle tone and locomotion [16]. This work emphasized the fact that the PPT not only triggers cortical arousal through its ascending projections through the intralaminar thalamus, but also activates descending postural and locomotion pathways in charge of fight-or-flight responses. These efforts led to the suggestion that stimulation of the PPT could be used for the treatment of the postural and walking deficits in Parkinson- ism. It took 20 years, but the PPT is now a region implanted in Parkinson’s patients to perform deep brain stimulation, with impressive clinical outcomes.
Another area of study by this lab involves the midlatency auditory evoked P50 potential. The Garcia-Rill lab was the first to describe decreased habituation of the P50 potential in posttraumatic stress disorder, one of the few markers for the disorder that has withstood the test of time. They also were the first to show decreased habituation of the P50 potential in depression, Parkinson’s disease, and Huntington’s disease. They were the first to identify the rodent equivalent of the P50 potential, the P13 potential. These waveforms are present during waking and REM sleep (they are sleep state-dependent), are blocked by scopolamine (they are cholinergic), and habituate rapidly (reticular in physiology), indicative of their origin in the PPT. That is, the P50 potential is a marker for PPT output in the human, an unexplored but potentially productive research area.
As if this were not enough, Garcia-Rill has co-authored several law reviews. These articles address the contributions of modern neuroscience to the formulation and application of the law. His law reviews run the gamut from scientific evidence to violence and future dangerousness, to intent and culpability. In keeping with new responsibilities as a modern neuroscientist, Garcia-Rill makes sure that his read- ers in the legal profession are exposed to the latest concepts derived in our field.
The fact is that the Sleep Science reviews reveal only some of the enormous range of this lab. Few individuals have contributed so many advances to the sleep field. These are not merely incremental advances but represent paradigm shifts characterized by imagination and intelligence. We sleep researchers have been introduced to the wonderful, puzzling, and inescapable world of gamma band activity by this group. These revelations have produced some of the most astounding advances in the sleep-wake field. I for one can hardly wait for the next mystery to be solved.
Garcia-Rill has opened the door to gamma band activity in the ascending reticular activating system (ARAS), with ever increasing implications. Their proposal that this system is involved in the process of preconscious awareness has major ramifications for volition and free will, as well as conscious- ness. We are all familiar with the profound sleep distur- bances caused by dysregulation of this region, but the significance of these changes has much wider implications for neurological and psychiatric disorders. The door has been opened by this lab and we should not only salute their accomplishments, but join them in their search for the answers to the mysteries of the ARAS.

By J. Viramontes
This book is mostly useful, but sometimes it is very frustrating when you are doing the exercises because some of them ask you questions about a text and the text cannot answer it. The questions are answerable for the most part, but those few that aren't make homework more annoying than it has to be. It also does not include answers to the practice questions in the grammar sections.

Inadequate and incorrect information about the Sun
By Robert J. Trembley
My wife is evaluating the Macmillan/McGraw-Hill Science series for her 3rd grade class. Doesn't get my vote.

One single page about the Sun, with an absolutely minuscule amount of useful information, and they got the core temperature completely wrong: it says 15M°C (which is correct) or 59M°F (which isn't).

Nothing about the fact that it's 99.86% of the total mass of the Solar System, nothing about what KIND of gases its made out of, nothing about the surface temperature.

Don Quixote: Translated by Edith Grossman, by Miguel de Cervantes

Don Quixote is the classic story. Called the first modern novel, this marvelous book has stood the test of time to become irrevocably intertwined with the fabric of society. Sixteenth-century Spanish gentleman Don Quixote, fed by his own delusional fantasies, takes to the road in search of chivalrous adventures. But his quest leads to more trouble than triumph. At once humorous, romantic, and sad, Don Quixote is a literary landmark. This fresh edition, by award-winning translator Edith Grossman, brings the tale to life as never before.

From Publishers Weekly
There would seem to be little reason for yet another translation of Don Quixote. Translated into English some 20 times since the novel appeared in two parts in 1605 and 1615, and at least five times in the last half-century, it is currently available in multiple editions (the most recent is the 1999 Norton Critical Edition translated by Burton Raffel). Yet Grossman bravely attempts a fresh rendition of the adventures of the intrepid knight Don Quixote and his humble squire Sancho Panza. As the respected translator of many of Latin America's finest writers (among them Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Carlos Fuentes and Mario Vargas Llosa), she is well suited to the task, and her translation is admirably readable and consistent while managing to retain the vigor, sly humor and colloquial playfulness of the Spanish. Erring on the side of the literal, she isn't afraid to turn out clunky sentences; what she loses in smoothness and elegance she gains in vitality. The text is free of archaisms the contemporary reader will rarely stumble over a word and the footnotes (though rather erratically supplied) are generally helpful. Her version easily bests Raffel's ambitious but eccentric and uneven effort, and though it may not immediately supplant standard translations by J.M. Cohen, Samuel Putnam and Walter Starkie, it should give them a run for their money. Against the odds, Grossman has given us an honest, robust and freshly revelatory Quixote for our times.

From the Back Cover

New York Times Bestseller

Widely regarded as the world's first modern novel, and one of the funniest and most tragic books ever written, Don Quixote chronicles the famous picaresque adventures of the noble knight-errant Don Quixote of La Mancha and his faithful squire, Sancho Panza, as they travel through sixteenth-century Spain. Unless you read Spanish, you've never read Don Quixote as presented by the formidable translator Edith Grossman, now in deluxe paperback.

It may be great, but Kindle edition messes up again
By Danmil
I have not read most of this yet, but I already know the Kindle edition is, ONCE AGAIN, badly formatted. The book starts out with some poems, and this is how the first one looks:

If to reach goodly read-
oh book, you proceed with cau-,
you cannot, by the fool-,
be called a stumbling nin-.
But if you are too impa
and pull the loaf untime-
from the fire and go careen-
into the hands of the dim
you'll see them lost and puzz-
though they long to appear learn-.

Looking at this travesty, I can't feel too optimistic about the rest of the book. I feel like I got ripped off for my $1.99.

Grossman's Translation of Don Quixote: The Emperor Has No Clothes
By Ian B. Cooper
Other than the fact that it's new and heavily hyped, I don't know how the Edith Grossman translation of Don Quixote is getting so many good reviews. It seems to me that the emperor has no clothes. To me Ms. Grossman's translation is a hard read, not because of Cervantes, but because Grossman's style is jarring, lacks the humor of the original and places way too much emphasis on translating Cervantes literally at the expense of comprehension.

Here's just one example of the latter failing:

"...it still fills me with misgivings to think that powder and tin may deprive me of the opportunity to become famous and renowned throughout the known world for the valor of my arm and the sharp edge of my sword."

Powder and tin? What does that mean? It's as incomprehensible to a modern reader as it would be to a reader in any of the 400 years between today and the book's first translation into English. Clearly Edith Grossman has no clue what Cervantes is talking about, as no one uses the term "powder and tin" in English and there are any number of phrases that would get the meaning across better: "powder and shot" or "gunpowder and lead" are comprehensible even to modern readers who know next to nothing of the technologies of 17th Century firearms, so why on Earth does she opt for a translation that no one has much chance of understanding except by stumbling on the phrase and having to search for a contextual explanation?

Cervantes said that prose should be "plain," "bare" and "unadorned." Grossman's prose is anything but. Her style is adorned, puffed-up and needlessly complicated - probably because she's way too concerned with a literal translation. For example, we have her describe a workman as:

"...a man-of-all-work who did everything from saddling the horse to pruning the trees."

A "man-of-all-work"? Does she mean a handyman? If she means a handyman, why not call him a handyman, or a laborer? Cervantes, had he written in English, surely would have done so. I mean, surely a phrase could be found that gets across the meaning without making up phrases that don't exist naturally in ordinary English.

And Grossman's desire to translate too literally leads to the most unforgivable sin, that of humorlessness. Cervantes is exuberant - he winks at the audience while he's telling his story. Yet Grossman misses the mark far too often. Take the following excerpt as an example:

"... you can believe that I would like this book, the child of my understanding, to be the most beautiful, the most brilliant, and the most discreet that anyone could imagine."

"Would like" can have a couple of meanings, but it doesn't necessarily convey the ironic meaning that Cervantes surely meant to convey - that of failure to live up to the desire. Certainly the text goes on to make the issue clear, but Grossman has missed a chance to make it crystal clear in the place the author surely intended to make it crystal clear, so the audience is left puzzled for far too long, seeking the author's intent instead of reading along while smiling in the shared humor.

Compare this to Putnam's "...you may believe me when I tell you that I should have liked this book, which is the child of my brain, to be the fairest, the sprightliest, and the cleverest that could be imagined." Certainly, Putnam, writing 60 years ago, sounds a little less modern, but in using the term "should have liked", he does find the sly wink in Cervantes' text and makes it clear at the point it should be made clear. Grossman does not. While her translation may achieve some kind of literal precision, it surely fails to quite achieve the precise meaning of the phrase.

If it was only a matter of a few missteps, I could forgive her - after all, no translation is perfect. However, these kinds of flaws appear throughout the book. As such, I think the translation is a bad one. It may be that Grossman achieves some sort of stylistic or literary perfection, but I don't see it, and I'm not sure that should be what a translator should be aiming for anyway. To me, it seems that, once people get beyond the hype, they won't be able to see what all the fuss was about.

Putnam, in his introduction to his translation of Don Quixote, warns that translators should not "betray the spirit by too faithful an aderence to the letter". I feel Edith Grossman would have done well to take those words to heart before she created her translation of this great book.

There are, by the way, three translations that I rate highly (I own all three):

1. Putnam's is considered a classic, though it is a little dated, and his notes are all at the back of the book (so I find them difficult to reference while reading. The Modern Library version is a nice hardcover.

2. Rutherford's translation is especially good for British English readers, but again his notes are all at the back of the book. Also, the only version I know of his book is paperback, by Penguin Classics.

3. Tom Lathrop's version is my favorite, with notes on the same page as the text. He can get carried away with his notes, but they do help. Unfortunately, this book is only available in softback, and it's by Signet Classics, and their paperbacks always seem cheaply made. Hopefully his translation will get a nice hardbound treatment soon, because his translation deserves to become the new standard by which all Don Quixote translations are measured.

Read it while you have dreams to make true
By Francisco J. Torres
I read this book when I was in my twenties and I liked the narrative and loved the people of Spain. Now that I am 50 years old I am reading it again and it is giving me a different perspective about life. I admire Don Quixote for seeing the world as a place to make true his dreams and fantasies

According to experts, this is one of the best books ever written, and always appears on the lists of best novels that have been published. It is the second most translated book after the Bible. It was given the distinction of "Best literary work ever written" by the Norwegian Book Club based on a vote of 100 weel known writers from 54 countries. It was one of the favorite books of Thomas Jefferson and was used as a reference by famous American writers such as Mark Twain, Herman Melville and William Faulkner. The Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky referred to this book as "the only conclusion that can be drawn from life if the world came to an end" Masterpieces of world literature such as Madame Bovary, by Gustave Flaubert, and Dostoevsky's The Idiot, are inspired by Don Quixote and were deliberately written based on the admiration that these writers felt for Cervantes’ book.

Don Quixote has all the basic ingredients to entertain: humor, romance, fights and horse chasing, among others. It was innovative at the time of publication and it is considered the first novel in modern literature. This was the first book in which different opinions and viewpoints coexisted harmoniously in the same environment. The dialogues between the characters are masterfully written and inspired by the Spanish theatrical tradition of writers such as Lope de Vega.

Don Quixote follows his quest as a knight with deep passion and commitment, always certain that his actions make a great contribution to the world. He shows the highest respect for all the people that he finds in his journey; being friends or rivals. But each time his fantasies crash with crude reality, as he and Sancho get beaten, injured, mocked and deceived. The confrontation between reality and fantasy is in episode of this book. Although Don Quixote tries desperately to become a hero he cannot be different than any other human being: proud and humble, strong and weak, wise and crazy

Sancho is always aware of Don Quixote’s madness, but he follows him loyally despite the fact that he often gets the worst part of the beatings. A great theme of this book is the friendship that these two different men develop based on mutual respect; Sancho learns from Don Quixote to put fantasies into his life and Don Quixote sees reality through Sancho’s’ companionship. The dialogues between Don Quixote and Sancho are very rich, often riddled with humor, but always revealing deeper human nature

All who have read Don Quixote have their own interpretation that often changes with age. After all, this interpretation depends on how everyone sees life. In this sense, Don Quixote can be seen as a description of life in form, rhythm and substance. The Peruvian writer, recipient of the Nobel Price of Literature, Mario Vargas Llosa said that Don Quixote is the personification of a disproportionate love of freedom and a rebellious spirit
