House of Lords Reform: A History: Volume 4. 1971-2014: The Exclusion of Hereditary Peers - Book 1: 1971-2001 - Book 2: 2002-2014, by Peter

Peter Raina’s magnificent history of Lords reform has already brought into the public domain a mass of original documents and thrown light on the debates they fuelled. In Volume 4 he brings his study up to the present age.
The Thatcher and Blair governments were both determined to shake up the system, and in such times the old House of Lords began to look more and more outdated. Mrs Thatcher’s inaction on the issue only increased calls for abolition or change. So the Blair government grasped the nettle. In one historic Act of Parliament it ejected hereditary peers from the House – except for 92 saved by a last-minute amendment. The negotiations and reactions surrounding this event are recorded here in lively detail.
This concluding book brings Peter Raina’s History of Lords’ Reform up to the end of 2014. It follows on from the banishment of hereditary peers from the House in the name of democracy. This was proclaimed as only the start of more sweeping change. What was to happen next?

Review
-Peter Raina has written a remarkable book about Lords Reform between 1960-69, those years were part of the long running discussions about the future of the Lords and they are brilliantly told in Mr Raina's book. For anybody interested in the History of Reform this is sensible reading.- (The Lord Carrington)<BR> -What a magnificent opus. From the start, I was gripped by admiration for [the] scholarship, mastery of the English language, and understanding of the British body politic! (...) As one who lived through it all - to have you bring out the differing climates of opinion - in the early 1960s to that of today - fascinating... [This] book is well described as magisterial.- (Sir Michael Wheeler-Booth, Honorary Fellow of Magdalen College, Oxford)"

Peter Raina's books on the House of Lords provide the most comprehensive and authoritative history of the evolution of a central institution in the British Parliamentary system. It is an indispensable study. (Professor the Lord Plant of Highfield)
Volume 4 is an extraordinary work of scholarship (Rt Hon. the Lord Lloyd of Berwick, former Lord Justice of Appeal and Attorney-General to the Prince of Wales)
My congratulations on your achievement (Rt Hon. the Baroness Hayman, former Lords Speaker)
I am delighted to have such detailed volumes about the time when I was involved in the politics of reform (Rt Hon the Baroness Jay of Paddington, former Leader of the House and Lord Privy Seal)

About the Author
Peter Raina has been a Visiting Fellow at the Institute of Historical Research, School of Advanced Study, University of London, and an Associate Member of Nuffield College, Oxford. He is presently Senior Research Associate at the Graduate Centre of Balliol College, Oxford.

The Saga of the Volsungs (Penguin Classics), by Jesse L. Byock, Anonymous

One of the great books of world literature--an unforgettable tale of jealousy, unrequited love, greed, and vengeance.

Based on Viking Age poems and composed in thirteenth-century Iceland, The Saga of the Volsungs combines mythology, legend, and sheer human drama in telling of the heroic deeds of Sigurd the dragon slayer, who acquires runic knowledge from one of Odin's Valkyries. Yet the saga is set in a very human world, incorporating oral memories of the fourth and fifth centuries, when Attila the Hun and other warriors fought on the northern frontiers of the Roman empire. In his illuminating Introduction Jesse L. Byock links the historical Huns, Burgundians, and Goths with the extraordinary events of this Icelandic saga. With its ill-fated Rhinegold, the sword reforged, and the magic ring of power, the saga resembles the Nibelungenlied and has been a primary source for such fantasy writers as J. R. R. Tolkien and for Richard Wagner's Ring cycle.

For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. Readers trust the series to provide authoritative texts enhanced by introductions and notes by distinguished scholars and contemporary authors, as well as up-to-date translations by award-winning translators.

Review
"[Byock is] very successful in his adept renderings of Eddic rhythm... The translation of prose is equally fine." -- Judy Quinn, Parergon

Language Notes
Text: English (translation)

From the Inside Flap
"This is a book of the highest importance. No one should attempt to teach about Viking society or claim to understand it without being familiar with this chilling and enduring myth."—Eleanor Searle, author of Predatory Kinship & the Creation of Norman Power

"Byock's translation is excellent, but his thorough introduction is of equal scholarly importance. . . . His section on Richard Wagner's use of the Volsung material in writing his Ring will expand the topic toward modern Wagnerians."—Michael Bell, University of Colorado

"The Saga of the Volsungs is one of the most important texts of Old Icelandic literature, with its treatment of Old Scandinavian heroic traditions. . . . The most difficult part of the text to translate is, of course, the poetry, but also here the translator has been successful."—Vésteinn Olason, University of Oslo

great story, great history/heritage
By G. Johnson
I recommend this book.
First, this is an interesting adventure/ set of adventures of ppl of long ago. Fun to read. The first half is mythical and has magical and religious elements (of pre-christian viking religion) with queer beasts, magical talismans and visiting gods. The second half is semi-historical with ppl who really lived in real places, and others who are speculated to be real ppl but their names while similar are different and so they may be fictional. However there is still some magic, and the ppl are often coexisting with other ppl from different eras, and so not really historical.)

Second, these tales show us (to some extent) how the ppl of old lived and thought and gives us a piece of our pre-Christian heritage. pretty much any citizen of UK and most of US are going to be related to the vikings). Maybe you don't need that history, but our culture is so awash in Roman and Greek culture, philosophy and myth (even tho we don't grow up on those writings as much as the generations up to 50 yrs ago did, so much language, expressions etc stem from there), not to mention the weight of Christian culture and thinking (nothing wrong with it, but again, it's not stories of N Euro ppl), that we have really forgotten a part of our heritage. It's really a big blank space.

Third, these old norse stories in addition to being an exciting adventure, have their share of wisdom about life in them as much as any of the old stories of the Gr/Roman/ Christian ones do.

I haven't read any other translation, and can't read the original, so I can't comment on the translation, but it reads well and clearly with easy to find notes that clarify or enlarge on the story/text. There are good essays/ appendices explaining history, culture, other works, as well as the family trees of the characters.
Altogether a good book.

Readable rendering of seminal saga
By Peter Reeve
This 13th century Icelandic saga of Sigurd the dragon slayer was rediscovered in 19th century Europe and was a prime source for Wagner's Ring cycle, especially the Siegfried part. Elements will also be found in Tolkien. Personally, I came to Norse mythology through the BBC's Adventures of Noggin the Nog (Did he ever put an end to Nogbad the Bad?).

It is a neglected tradition, as evidenced by the paucity of translations in print. We commonly talk of the Classical (Greek and Roman) and Judeo-Christian roots of our culture, but greatly underestimate the Norse and Celtic influences. The Volsung saga and the Niebelungenlied are among the best known and influential of the medieval epics and if you enjoy one you will probably enjoy the other. You might start with the Volsungs because theirs is the shorter and more coherent story, even though the more mythical and fantastic.

Byock's translation is very readable, reflecting the sparse, unadorned style of the original. His introduction is excellent, especially the notes on Wagner, in which he traces the influence of this work in the Ring.

The Saga of Ragnar Lodbrok and The Lay of the Raven follow the Volsung saga in the original manuscripts and form a continuous narrative. So why, as the Volsung saga is quite short, are they not all three published together in one volume? I felt rather short changed. Even so, I heartily recommend this book.

A Famous Tale Well Translated
By Abrubacca
I wasn't familiar with the Saga of the Volsungs when I bought this book, recommended by a friend. I had read the Prose Edda and the Poetic Edda and enjoyed their great scope and sweep. Here the focus is on one family and its victories, tragedies, betrayals, and revenges. While I was not as enthralled by its story as I was by the Eddas, I've realized since I read it that it brings down to a human scale the mythology and cultural morality I am studying. I am still confused by the ethics and morality of the tale and its time--a good thing; 21st Century people have to reach across more than a dozen centuries to understand these works, written without any knowledge of Christianity.

I've decided to set this book aside for a few months and pick it up again. That says a lot about its value.

The Classical Greek ReaderFrom Oxford University Press

Scholarly commentary on the nuances of Greek writing fills library shelves, even entire libraries. Yet nothing can take the place of the documents themselves. The Classical Greek Reader marks an exciting departure from the traditional anthology approach to Greek literature and thought. By focusing not only on the big names but also on the less-familiar voices--the women, doctors, storytellers, herbalists, and romance writers--we are offered a glimpse of ancient Greece as we have rarely seen it.

Kenneth J. Atchity provides the reader with firsthand access to literary, artistic, social, political, religious, scientific, and philosophical texts that shaped Greek thinking. From Homeric epics to the histories of Plutarch, and from the poems of Korinna to the romances of Heliodorus, this invaluable reference provides readers with modern translations of the voices that shaped the classical Greek spirit. Each entry contains an introduction identifying the author and providing information that allows readers to consider these ancient texts in a new light.
Here are the wonders of the Greek world presented in a modern, accessible manner, perfect for those looking to refresh their acquaintance with the classics and for those who have yet to explore the exciting intellectual energy of the ancient Greek world.

Review

"Atchity's passionate connection to a lost and compelling world underlies every entry in his page-turning Classical Greek Reader....It is Athcity's introduction to the minor, yet memorable, characters that lends a distinctive poignancy and charm to this survey."--Smithsonian

"Excellent selections as well as graceful, accurate translations....An ideal reader for introductory courses to Greek culture at the undergraduate level."--Dan O' Bryan, Sierra Nevada College

"Atchity deserves commendations for including authors not normally found in English translation surveys....The diversity of voices and topics, drawn from 700 years of Roman history, allows for a fairly complete overview not afforded by most Latin readers....This book is recommended for all undergraduate libraries."--Religious Studies Review

"A magnificent achievement."--The Bookwatch

"This is a principled, courageous, literate, and sensitive anthology that deserves widespread use in appropriate courses--or on one's own--and will richly reward it. It begins with Homer, of course, and it ends with Heliodorus. In between is an intelligent and original selection of self-articulating works."--Tom Clayton, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis

"What enchanting musings from Kenneth Atchity, musings that color the thrills of entering the ancient world, musings that clearly guide the reader to explore the words and lives of the classical writers. A well-organized, well-written introduction to the classics!"--Joyce Marie Miller, Collin City County Community College, Plano TX

"The selections are balanced for genre, period, outlook, and style and seem to be uniformly well translated. I admire the decision to include technical, historical, late, and lyric work."--Philip O'Mara, Bridgewater College

"This interesting and wide-ranging selection of excerpts of authors from Homer to Heliodorus should give the beginner an insight into classical Greek civilization."--Patricia P. Matsen, University of South Carolina, Columbia

Although I can understand Atchity's intention to cover to as many authors as possible for an anthology on classical Greek authors, I can't understand his decision to include little to nothing by Plato and Aristotle. Small excerpts from Plato's "Republic" and Aristotle's "Poetics" -- that's it??? Given their breadth of work and strength of influence, any volume that proclaims itself "THE Classical Greek Reader" should have included much more from Plato and Aristotle. Atchity should have omitted some of the (many) more obscure authors.

Musty Translations
By T. W.
Why did Oxford, in 1996, reprint prose translations from Kathleen Freeman's 1926 "Life and Work of Solon," with their cries of "Yea!" and "Ye glorious children of Memory"? Couldn't it get the rights to West's 1993 "Greek Lyric Poetry" at least (also published by Oxford)? More disconcertingly, we get an English Empedocles here of the vintages 1880 and 1898. Most of the major poets fare better, but Sophocles' "Antigone" is in H.R. Fairclough and A.T. Murray's 1902 Wardour Street ("didst thou") version.

With no reservations, I can declare this a very poorly conceived anthology. Anyone would do better to buy up a bunch of good translations in used paperbacks.

If you absolutely had to have an anthology, I'm not sure what is best, but "The Norton Book of Classical Literature," ed. B.M.W. Knox, is certainly far better.

Review

"International Organizational Behavior: Transcending Borders and Cultures by Dean McFarlin and Paul Sweeney builds on previous work by the authors and state-of-the-art research to provide an invaluable guide to anyone interested in managing in the international arena. Building on cultural frameworks and including actionable concepts and practical applications, the book covers management of individuals, teams, and personnel across borders. The most valuable components are the many linkages between theory of cross-cultural interactions and observed behavior in specific management-related instances, such as communication patterns, negotiation styles, and conflict management, among many others. A must-read in an incresingly complex and ever-changing world."

João Neiva de Figueiredo, Assistant Professor in the Department of Management at Saint Joseph's University, Senior Fellow at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School

"The strength of this textbook is that it goes beyond other international textbooks by asking students to challenge their preconceived notions of other cultures as well as their own. It presents international management theories and then helps students critique what they have learned, providing intriguing examples from multiple perspectives. Critical thinking is a valuable tool for any student in a rapidly changing global environment and this textbook provides the opportunity to develop this skill."

Kristina A. Bourne, Assistant Professor of Management, University of Wisconsin -- Eau Claire

"McFarlin and Sweeney continue their record of providing an interesting, cohesive discussion of international management topics. As a former journalist, I appreciate how the authors have selected lively, current International Insights examples for the chapters. The book’s coverage enhances our students’ learning in other courses such as marketing, organizational behavior and strategy."

John P. Orr, Ph.D.

Great book for the culture challenge coverage
By Donald Hsu
This book is used for a college course, with the same title. The 14 chapters cover: On a Global Stage, Legal Political Foundations of International Management, Doing Things Right, Making Decisions across Culture, Perception Interpretation Attitudes, Communicating Effectively, Taking Stock, Jumping In, Making it Work, Motivating Leading across the Cultures, Building an Effective International Workforce, Evaluating Employees Worldwide, and Managing Groups across Cultures.

I added many real life success stories of International Managers, Carlos Ghosn, Lou Gerstner, Larry Fink, etc. Students are doing their final projects on the world billionaires, that started companies H&M, Zara, LVMH, Telmex, etc. They enjoy reading this book.

The book will be better if more Case Studies are included.
