The science behind the speed

This is an excellent book about how NASCAR race cars are engineered to perform like they do. The author is a college Physics professor and the book is written to explain with basic scientific terms and knowledge that the average reader can understand written in a very interesting manner.

The areas discussed include aerodynamics, materials,engines, fuels, tires, shocks, drivetrain and others, and the author spent time with Elliott Sadler and the 19 team both at the shop and the track to help the NASCAR fan understand how things work like they do. I am a long time fan and also an engineer and there was a lot of info that I can use when I give fans pit road and garage tours at Michigan Intl Speedway. This book will help me explain things to the fans in a easy way.

This would also be a great book for a high school aged race car enthusiast/budding engineer to help them understand how school subjects like Physics can have exciting real world applications. I was a big racing fan when I was taking physics in high school and engineering courses in college and the textbook problems we had did not seem very relevant or interesting. A book like this would have made those subjects a lot more fun.
I own many many NASCAR and racing books and this is one of the best. Highly recommended!

The Racing of Automobiles - From Inside Out

I'm not a NASCAR fan by any stretch of the imagination. But this book's title intrigued me. Browsing through it and seeing all the interesting diagrams convinced me that I should buy it and read it. I did and I was not disappointed. The author, a physicist, is a gifted expositor of scientific principles at a level ideal for the general reader. She explains, using many useful analogies (and no mathematics), the finer points involved in building an automobile suitable for racing the NASCAR circuits. The book could just as easily have been entitled "The Science of NASCAR" since sciences other than physics are also involved and explained, e.g., chemistry, metallurgy, aerodynamics, engineering, biology, etc. In addition to the science, the author gives a fascinating overview of some of the dedicated people who are involved in building and racing a potentially winning car as they do their work before, during and after a race. The writing style is clear, authoritative, very accessible and quite engaging. Based on the way this book is written, it can be enjoyed by absolutely anyone, not only science buffs or NASCAR fans.

Don't wait for the movie

This book would translate nicely into a Discovery Channel series. You know, high-interest, science-to-the-masses kind of stuff. Give it a year; it's going to happen! I am a fan of "The Physics Of.." books, and some disappoint: they can be so thorough [read hyper-mathematic] as to resemble homework; or they can be so simplified they read like a children's book. Most land somewhere in between. Take, for instance,Adair's book on the Physics of Baseball: it's fantastic, but I wouldn't recommend it to just anyone. It contains more mathematics than the average Joe (or Jane) is equipped to handle. But this book, The Physics of NASCAR, follows the Goldilocks Principle: it's just right. Not too pithy, not too watered down. High interest, easy access, entertaining insights. If you like popular science, you'll enjoy this book. Personally, I love the way the author pulls in characters from the NASCAR family. It gives the book personality! She does a great job with the science as well. There were a couple of bobbles here and there, but she covered a LOT of ground. This book is really a text in applied physics (and biology and chemistry), sans the quantitative rigor. I would love to adapt it to my high school curriculum--it would certainly grab my students' attention. If you teach physics at the high school or college level, this book is the perfect supplement to a course on physics for non-majors, or simply a means to raise the interest/relevance level for the concepts you teach. Buy it. If it doesn't work out, then re-sell it on Amazon's Marketplace. Now there's a win-win situation! Hope that helps...

A thread is an independent sequence of execution of program code inside a UNIX process.The book describes the primary facilities for implementing multithreaded applications and offers the programmer practical guidance in using these facilities.

From the Inside Flap
Threads are a new and powerful tool. As with most powerful tools, programmers must apply threads with discretion lest they do more harm than good. Part of the art of good multithreaded programming is knowing when not to use threads. Keep in mind that UNIX has gotten along for many years without them. The real impetus toward using threads has been the increasing popularity of multiprocessors and client-server computing. Typically, programs are expected to handle many requests simultaneously in these situations.

This book is for programmers interested in a practical guide to developing multithreaded programs. This book concentrates on teaching when and how to apply threads, what problems to expect and how to deal with them. It covers concurrency theory relatively lightly as there are many other books and papers that do better justice to the topic. This book also can be used as reference for the practicing threads programmer.

We assume that you are generally familiar with both UNIX programming concepts and the C programming language. It will be helpful if you have some experience with asynchronous programming using signal handlers or with programs that respond to multiple events, such as window or network programs.

This book is designed to be a general guide to programming with threads, not a tutorial on a specific set of interfaces. The two main UNIX threads interfaces are the IEEE Portable Operating System Interface (POSIX) standard P1003.1c (also called "Pthreads" and ISO/IEC 9945-1:1990c) and the UNIX International (UI) threads standard (see Appendix\x11B, "UNIX International Threads"). Both have the same basic model of threads, though the actual function definitions tend to use different styles. The coding examples in this book use the thread and operating system interfaces specified by the POSIX standards.

The POSIX thread standard specifies the threads application programming interfaces and the ways in which the other POSIX interfaces behave with respect to threads. In practice, threads programming also involves using other, non-standard aspects of the threads programming environment such as debuggers, performance tools, and non-standard libraries. In addition, effective threads programming requires some knowledge of the potential ways that the interfaces may be implemented within the standard. This book explains some of the tools available in the threads programming environment and some of the potential threads implementation strategies. In-depth examples of tools and implementation strategies are taken from the SolarisTM programming environment from Sun Microsystems.

In many cases, a threads programmer will be asked to convert existing applications and libraries to be multithreaded. This book covers potential approaches to threading existing code.

A must have book on threading

Must have book that anybody interested in threading should have. Certainly not for beginner. Explains the basic constructs of threading and then takes specific instances where threading can be applied.

A simpler introductory manual

This book should have been called "Introduction to Posix threads in Solaris and multithreading issues".
Pros:
- covers Posix threads, including more complex aspects, which are "usually neglected by ... implementors" to quote the authors. Includes threads cancellation and fork behaviour.
- a set of ideas, problems and methods that you may encounter while developing multithreaded software. Most of them are on the simpler side though.
- compact, highly informative chapters (average to 20 pages each).
Cons:
- No word on differences between Unix flavours. Basically it's all refers to Solaris, which I can understand, since Mr. Kleiman is the head of Sun Solaris threading dept (also Posix threads committee member).
- C API only, no existing C++ implementations behaviour or really anything C++ related.
- Mostly recommendations. Nothing on the _existing_ practices, libs or whatever. One or two of the existing bigger pieces of software could have been surgically dissembled to show how it's done. Some math analysis is shown, but it ends with yet another recommendation.
- The methods and problems covered could be more deep, otherwise it's sort of an introduction.
- Some of the samples are too big.
Overall:
- Gives you an impression that the authors are very knowledgeable (yeah, right, see note on who one of the authors is), and capable of explaining complex things with simple words, but a little bit ignorant in that they consider the reader not worth sharing more knowledge with.
- Certain chapters must be stripped out, and more pure theoretical info added.
- A recommended book all in all.

Excellant in depth

The Book assume the reader has background in threading and OS internal related concepts (althouth pthread is for applications, it has strong similiarity with OS design issue). It gives a concise introduction to the pthread interface and semantics, then quickly (yeah, I like such way) go into application and related issue discussions. I find such way is very intuitive and meet my taste.
There are two drawbacks from general point of view, one is the book is not appopriate for Unix beginner. The other one is the examples are taken from handy code, not well trimmed to only pinpoint the topics, but it make me feel more natural and practical.

Noel de Nevers is a member of the faculty of the Department of Chemical and Fuels Engineering at the University of Utah. He received a BS from Stanford, and an MS and PhD degrees from the University of Michigan. He is the author of Fluid Mechanics for Chemical Engineers and Air Pollution Control Engineering.

Not good....

This book is bad.
In equation developments, it uses cartesian coordinates in a funky way. It changes them! This might not be a problem, but this book uses coordinate systems that don't follow the right-hand rule. For me this was very disturbing, because throughout my education the right-hand rule for coordinate systems was God's word.
Another thing is the example problems. When the book shows you the solution, it jumps right into numbers, without even showing you the symbolic development, or what numbers represent what variables. It expects you to infer this from the units!
N.B. I've only read the first 50 pages or so of this book, and my frustration led me to write this review. My opinions aren't supported with a complete sense of the book. Then again, the fact that even the elementary, development part of the book frustrates me could show just how bad this book will become in the latter parts.

About the Author
Daniel Solis is a contract software engineer who has worked for a number of high-profile clients, including Microsoft Consulting Services, IBM, Lockheed Martin, and PeopleSoft. He has been programming and teaching object-oriented languages and development methods throughout the U.S. and Europe since the early days of C++. It was while teaching numerous seminars on various programming languages that he realized the immense power of diagrams in explaining programming language concepts.

A very well-written C# 4 book., highly recommended

Over the past 10 years, C# has evolved into a rather complex computer language. C# is the de facto language for developing applications for .NET environment. As .NET platform evolves, so does C#. (It is statically type, object oriented based language, and yet supports dynamically type, generic, and some functional programming style.) To learn to use C# properly requires efforts and good text book. Illustrated C# 2010 is one of the few good books for the subject on the market right now. However, the book does not teach basic programming, nor does it teach windows GUI programming. It's strictly for teaching how to write programs in the latest version of C#. The author assumes readers have had some programming experience. Because of the book's format, it's also an excellent C# 4 reference for professional programers. It's in the same category of book as "C# 4 in a NutShell." But illustrated C# 2010 is way much easier to comprehend than the NutShell book due to author's writing stype. Each topic is covered thorougly first by simple, to the point and easy to understand short paragraph with well illustrated figures and diagrams, then a short (less than half a page) of complete C# example is given with output. The book also has a very detail table of content and useful index; it is essential to locate topic quickly.

Illustrated C# 2010, published by Apress, is an introduction to C# for novices and experienced programmers alike. It leads you progressively through the constructs and rules of the language, from the basics of classes and control structures, through intermediate topics such as properties and generics, to the more esoteric constructs such as delegates, events, and concurrent programming. It is bang up to date with C#4, replacing the previous version - Illustrated C# 2008 - which was aligned with C#3.

This is the book that I used to learn C#. I found it useful both as a tutorial guide and - subsequently - as a working reference. It almost always answered my questions. It is well organised enough that you can skip chapters you are not interested in, though an explicit map of chapter dependencies would help. I found only one error, and that in the course of composing this review. The level of formality is just right. The book also benefits from the liberal use of simple clear diagrams. But there are two or three weak chapters: chapter 4 introducing classes, and chapters 15 and 16 on delegates and events respectively.

As I learned to employ automatic properties, lambda expressions, and extension methods, my programming style evolved from what you would write in C++ towards what you would write in Smalltalk. I was also able to change the application I was developing into a concurrent one without pain. My easy progress is a tribute to the clarity of the relevant chapters.

I consider this book more useful to a student of the language than a conventional programming primer. It lacks substantial examples. And it makes no attempt to cover the .NET class library. But it is easy to pick up examples from the internet these days. And the Microsoft documentation of the .NET class library is excellent: more comprehensive and better organised than any textbook could contain. I have ever and anon found referring to a primer annoying: the information is hard to find, diffuse, incomplete, and redundant. Besides, the development environments: Visual C# for Windows or MonoDevelop for more or less everything, have - in the words of Bertrand Russell - the subtlety and suggestiveness which at times make them almost seem like a live teacher.

Excellent book to learn und understand

As a programmer for many, many years and in transition to master C# the idea of the Apress Illustrated book series was a great help for me. It is so easy not just to read endless text, but having the graphic layout as support.
I can say this for Illustrated C# 2008, my first book from this series, and now for the 2010 edition with all the new features in C#, it brings me up to speed again.
Special the well organized style makes it easy to me, to understand areas which I always struggled. Since parts of C# have new terms, with this books it is the first time, that I can explore deeper in areas, which I mostly avoided (Structs, Delegates, Generics, etc) without reading for hours.
I would recommend this book for the entry level as well as a valuable endorsement for experienced programmers, since it is very easy to find a topic and get the meaning in a short time due to the excellent graphic layout.
