Watch out!The two copies I received (one was the replacement) were finishing at page 645, whereas in the description it says that it has 887 pages! The last part of the book is lost!!

Young Love at its Best

What can I say? The third volume of Love at Fourteen continues its amazing story of young romance. What makes this series so impressive is how easily readers will empathize with the characters. And by the third volume, the cast of characters has grown to a point where you'll have no trouble picking out both your favorite person and your favorite budding relationship.

After the events in the last volume, there's now tension between the boys and girls of class 2-B. Kanata and Kazuki who step in trying to mediate the situation actually get sucked into it themselves. This results in the couple getting into their first fight ever with delightful consequences (at least to us readers). While this arc isn't necessarily one of my favorites due to its reliance on classic romcom tropes of misunderstandings driving the conflict, the arc does contain some of the author's best drawings on the series yet. I'll try not to reveal too much, but let's just say the characters fantasize about their love interests in school play costumes and man oh man is it stunning.

While Yen Press's summary advertises Kanata and Kazuki's fight as the main story for this volume, thankfully there's plenty more story to read including Kanata's first experience with makeup and a meaty arc between Nagai and Hinohara-sensei where Nagai questions whether or not Hinohara cares about him. This was definitely my favorite part of the book and as you can probably guess, my favorite couple.

One last thing that must be said is Aoi Shiki wins this volume's contest of best character. Ironically, while I like her the least of the main cast, she is arguably the most interesting because of her porcupine-like personality and numerous flaws. When you see the results of her efforts, your heart is going to ache for her.

Yen Press has done a great job with the series. I can happily report that the translation is awesome, and quality of the book is just stellar. The volume contains a few gorgeous, glossy-colored pages and an afterwards from the author. While I can't wait for the next volume, there's definitely more than enough content here that will tide me over before September's release.

I love how realistic this series is. It’s mature, in the way that it handles first love, and the way they’re mature characters, while insecure. The way the characters look at each other, their feelings develop, is subtle and slow, but at a steady, realistic pace.

Kanata and Kazuki have a fight, without meaning to or understanding how it happened. They try keeping up their good faces in front of their classmates. And then they make up, and it’s shy and sweet. They go out together, try to do things to impress each other. Kanata tries lip gloss, and wants Kazuki to notice.

Then there’s Nagai, who tends to show anger when he gets attention. I know some people will be uncomfortable with his developing relationship with their teacher, but I’m not. Maybe I should be, given I’m not sure how far apart in age they all are. But I kind of like how she teases him, pushes him. And how, in return, he’s starting to get to her.

And Shiki. I cannot express how pleased I am this series has straight couples (potential ones), and a gay character. I love it! She’s in love with Kanata, and I enjoy the way she thinks in third-person. She gets little chapters of thoughts, showing her feelings and growing friendship with Kanata, as well as her jealousy of Kazuki. I’m so impressed with this.

Then we got peaks of new characters at the end of the volume. I don’t know if we’ll see more of them, but I love the glimpses we get of other characters. Just little thoughts from main and side characters in snipets, the subtly showing worlds of thought and growth and work.

I love this series already. I’m wildly impressed with the development and thought and complexity. I can’t wait for the next one, every time.

Adorable couple

I love the innocence these two share when they are together and apart. It reminds me of how much we go through as adolescents when we start to recognize ourselves and those around us. Not only are these two dealing with this, but they have to deal with the feelings of blooming love as well. Seeing them move from one step at a time is just too sweet for words.

After finally getting to visit the city of Hyderabad - the former capital of India's largest princely state - this summer, I became interested in reading John Zubrzycki's The Last Nizam: An Indian Prince In The Australian Outback.

The first 150 or so pages summarises the history of the first 7 of Hyderabad's 8 dynastic rulers, their battles, their lifestyle, and their dealings with the British who had a strong controlling influence on their state for a number of centuries. The author writes about this period informatively, but not interestingly.

In 1947, when India became independent, Hyderabad and the other more than 500 princely states were left by the departing British to face an uncertain future. Zubrycki describes Hyderabad's somewhat violent incorporation into the new nation of India and the subsequent fate of the Asaf Jah dynasty (led by its Nizams) that had ruled it for many centuries. This is where his book begins to become more of a pleasure to read.

As predicted by a fakir during the life of the first Nizam, the death of the 7th Nizam marked the absolute end of the dynasty's rule. What was it that might have helped fulfil this prediction? It might have been the incorporation of Hyderabad into a then socialist-leaning nation. The 8th Nizam's preference for things mechanical as opposed to matters regal was not conducive to the continuance of a dynasty, nor was preferring to live on a desolate farm in Australia rather than in one of his palaces in Hyderabad. The factors that led to things falling apart in the former princely state are described in the chapters in the book, which are largely dedicated to the life of the 8th Nizam, with whom the author has met and become well-acquainted. These chapters help rescue a book, which began by holding my attention poorly, to become quite interesting.

Undoubtedly, this is an important book for anyone interested in the history of the princely states, but possibly not the most riveting history book ever written.

Strangely absent from American bookstores

The only nit I will pick is the author's belaboring of accounting details pertaining to the finances of the last Nizam. Otherwise, this book is a very readable, interesting, and valuable history of princely Hyderabad, with a fascinating biography of the last of the line, taking us with him right up to recent years. My wife brought this book back from a trip to Pakistan; otherwise, I never would have been treated to it, since American booksellers have for some very bad reason chosen not to distribute it. If you can find it, read it!

Simply a waste of time. Yes they are a very clever series of tricks to do arithmetic in your head, but with numerous exceptions and caveats. A bright student may look at these with some interest to see why they work, but for the vast majority of students there is no value in more rules to be learnt and certainly no understanding of basic maths to be gained.

She accurately and knowingly depicts New York City from bodegas to boardrooms, and even the far-fetched science upon which the novel hinges seems well researched. For readers who wondered if things were any better in a bustling city, here is the horrifying answer. On the night the moon tilts, 17-year-old Alex and his younger sisters are alone; their mother is at work, and their father is visiting Puerto Rico. No matter how the kids wish, hope, and pray, their parents don’t return. It’s up to Alex to do what’s best. At first that means bartering for food and batteries and avoiding fighting with the rambunctious Julie—especially after sickly Bri is sent to live at a rural convent. Later it means rescuing Julie from rapists and steering her away from the corpses that litter the street, providing food for rats. Religion is one of the strong threads running through the novel. It would have been interesting to see Alex wrestle more with his staunch Catholicism, but in many ways, the Church anchors the plot. The story’s power, as in the companion book, comes from readers’ ability to picture themselves in a similiar situation; everything Pfeffer writes about seems wrenchingly plausible. Enjoyable

This book is well-written, and I again enjoyed the overall story. I say “again,” however, because this book is very similar to its predecessor, “Life As We Knew It.” I knew nothing about “The Dead & The Gone” other than that it is the second book in the “Last Survivors” series. When I began reading, I was surprised to discover that this book didn’t pick up where “Life As We Knew It” left off, but instead went back to the beginning and followed a completely different family in New York as they experienced the same struggles that occurred from the ‘shifting’ of the moon. I will openly admit that I was a bit disappointed that I wouldn’t be continuing on with Miranda’s story. I enjoyed reading her thoughts and experiencing what she experienced along with her. When everything ended as well as it could (all things considered) I was hopeful that her journey would continue and things would just keep getting better. Or, at the very least, that things would continue to be difficult, but that we’d still be able to experience that journey along with her.

So imagine my shock when the narrative changed and I was suddenly hearing about Alex Morales. It was a challenge to adjust to an entire new family, as I had felt like I was part of Miranda’s family, having been with them from the start. Even more, it was challenging to start at the very beginning, right after the moon had been struck, knowing all the terrible things that were to come. Don’t get me wrong, “The Dead & The Gone” was still very good. It was interesting to experience everything from a different perspective, in a different location, with different people and be able to compare their individual journeys. But I will admit (SPOILER ALERT) that the Morales’ journey was even more trying and heartbreaking, in the end. Nevertheless, the entire concept upon which this series resides is extremely interesting, and I will most definitely continue reading the remaining books.

It's up to you (to get out of) New York, New York

"The Dead and the Gone" is book 2 in a 4-book (so far) series by Susan Beth Pfeffer which she has named "The Last Survivors." I knew from book 1 that the other books in this series would be a treat but I didn't expect Book 2 to be even better than the first. Miranda, the heroine of "Life as We Knew It," is revealed to be very lucky. She comes from a family of four (a mother and three children) all of whom are able to survive in a village in northeast Pennsylvania for ten months. Alex Morales, the hero of "The Dead and the Gone," is part of a family of six (he is the second of four children) living on the Upper West Side in Manhattan of which only three members are alive at the end of the book. The parents drown on the first night, as a result of the very high tides that result from the moon being closer, and the death of one of Alex's siblings (I won't say which one) represents the climax of the book.

New York goes to hell in a handbasket; death rises around the protagonists like one of the super-tides pulled by the moon. The collision that pushes the moon closer to the earth takes place in mid-May. By mid-July bodies are being left on the street in the Upper West Side. The last delivery of emergency rations to that part of Manhattan takes place on December 9. The last day chronicled is December 29, by which time New York is almost completely abandoned, as opposed to Howell, Pennsylvania, which still had between a quarter and a sixth of its pre-collision population the following March. Things are worse for Alex than for Miranda because while her family had an enormous stockpile of food, his must leave the house constantly to get food.

I thought both the role of both violence and religion during a period of social breakdown were depicted more realistically in this book than in the first, which is the reason I give this book a full five stars. Alex's family is deeply religious and their faith sustains them both literally (they are fed at the parochial school they attend) and spiritually. God and His representatives on earth become the only people Alex can talk to about what he is going through, as he tries to protect his sisters from the full implications of what is happening. Alex's first sister rarely leaves the house after an ill-fated attempt to join a convent, but his second sister becomes a target of men with base desires and nothing to lose by fulfilling them. You know society hasn't completely broken down, however, because social class becomes even more important than it previously was, with the rich and well-connected not having to creep past dead bodies all the time in their part of New York (apparently Midtown), foreshadowing the fourth book, in which (the reviews tell us) a rigid caste system has set in in Tennessee.

Book 3, "This World we Live In," brings together the surviving characters from Book 1 and Book 2 and I can't wait to read it. Fortunately, I ordered all of the last three books in the series at the same time from Amazon, so I don't have to. Five stars.

Great Story...Stupid Kids????

First things first...I am totally enjoying the 2nd installment of the series. However, as well thought out the author has done regarding the "weather events"....she is in a 180 degree difference when it comes to the people-oriented events.

If you have not read any of these series...stop right here.....buy them...read them...and if you want to come back and read my only challenges...do that...

If you have read the books ...well read on and see if you agree:
I have a hard time believing that there was hardly ever an event where these kids walked out the door in desolated NYC and no "bad people" awaited them. ONCE...that's it...once....and the guy never came back...hmmmmmmm...reality check. But let's explain that off that all the bad people have left that section of NY (where they went is anyone's guess)

But the thing that totally eludes me (and my co-listener, Cynthia) is this.....they are on the 12th floor of an apartment building and are only able to get into a handful of apartments in order to grab whatever food is in there. As the story progresses they are teetering on the edge of starvation. If there were just 5 apartments on each floor there would be 60 apartments. They invaded ..a few.
So let's say there are 50 apartments that they didn't go into because they didn't have keys and the doors were made from steel. Um, uh.....the doors may be steel...but the walls are most likely Dri Wall! If anyone reading this has any experience with DriWall...you simply take a hammer or any thing hard and smash it right in. So here we have three kids starving to death....and all around them are apartments that have no one living in them and most likely a total of one year's food there...and instead they go out hunting for trinkets on dead people and stand in line for 5 hours in the freezing cold waiting to get a bag of food....HUH????

OK...So I pretended I was back in the 70s when I could puff on a magic cigarette and suspend all reality...and I get through this glaring stupidity of these kids..I still LOVE the story!!!

Frederick Fuller has served as a United Nations translator, Language Supervisor for the British Broadcasting Corporation during World War II, and a British Council lecturer in Argentina, Brazil, and Chile. Mr. Fuller studied Romance and Germanic philology at Liverpool, Munich, the Sorbonne, and Harvard.

The foundamentals to understand the quality of lyric voices

It is impossible to find in the original language The History of Bel Canto. It is only available in some Conservatory Library.
This History is foundamental to clearly understand the evolution of the several technics of singing through the centuries. Rodolfo Celletti is probably the most reliable living "expert" of lyric voices. By reading his works you can distinguish a real, good operatic voice from trivial and bad voices.
