About the Author

John Foster was tutorial Fellow of Brasenose College 1966-2005 and an Emeritus Fellow from 2005-2009. His research interests have been in the fields of metaphysics, epistemology, mind, and language. He was the author of The Case for Idealism (1982), Ayer (1985), The Immaterial Self (1991), and The Nature of Perception (2000).

A Beautiful Book

Foster presents here a solution to the problem of induction and an argument for the existence of God. He argues that the past regularities of nature are best explained by the existence of natural laws, and that these are in turn best understood as regularities causally imposed by God. The existence of such laws allows for rational inductive inferences.
Foster's development of the theistic hypothesis (his preference for a single omnipotent, omniscient and perfectly good God) seems to borrow from Swinburne, but there are differences.
I worry that there is no non-circular justification for the criteria for hypothesis choice that Foster relies on; Hume's problem of induction may re-emerge for inference to the best explanation. But perhaps it is no problem that inference to the best explanation is a fundamental form of correct reasoning which cannot be justified in a non-circular way (along with deduction), and the problem may be that induction faces an additional problem such that it is not a fundamental form of correct reasoning. (This has been suggested to me by a couple of people, and note Foster at Lecture 2, V).
Foster covers some of the most interesting and important topics in philosophy, including the problem of induction, laws of nature and the existence of God. Very few people compare to Foster in clarity and grace of writing.
This book may (or may not) be difficult for beginners, but it is strongly recommended for anyone seriously interested in induction theory, laws of nature and philosophy of religion.

A Sly Argument for Design

The Divine Lawmaker: Lectures on Induction, Laws of Nature, and the Existence of God by John Foster (Oxford University Press) presents a clear and powerful discussion of a range of topics relating to our understanding of the universe: induction, laws of nature, and the existence of God. He begins by developing a solution to the problem of induction-a solution whose key idea is that the regularities in the workings of nature that have held in our experience hitherto are to he explained by appeal to the controlling influence of laws, as forms of natural necessity. His second line of argument focuses on the issue of what we should take such necessitational laws to be, and whether we can even make sense of them at all. Having considered and rejected various alternatives, Foster puts forward his own proposal: the obtaining of a law consists in the causal imposing of a regularity on the universe as a regularity. With this causal account of laws in place, he is now equipped to offer an argument for theism. His claim is that natural regularities call for explanation, and that, whatever explanatory role we may initially assign to laws, the only plausible ultimate explanation is in terms of the agency of God. Finally, he argues that, once we accept the existence of God, we need to think of him as creating the universe by a method which imposes regularities on it in the relevant law-yielding way. In this new perspective, the original nomological-explanatory solution to the problem of induction becomes a theological-explanatory solution.
The Divine Lawmaker is bold and original in its approach, and rich in argument. The issues on which it focuses are among the most important in the whole epistemological and metaphysical spectrum.
The Divine Lawmaker is a slightly revised version of a series of lectures that Foster gave at the University of Oxford under the title of `Induction, Laws of Nature, and the Existence of God'-a title that explicitly indicates the topics that form their subject matter.
Foster covers quite a lot of philosophical and theological ground. And, on the face of it, diverse ground. But there is a connection between the different topics. One of his main aims is to provide an argument for the existence of God-a personal God of a broadly Jewish Christian type. Foster develops his arguments in four stages that include the topics of induction and laws of nature.
Foster begins by looking at the familiar problem of induction, claiming that certain ways of attempting to solve it do not work. The idea of induction occupies the first two lectures. Next-at stage two- Foster introduces and defends what he asserts is, in its core, the right solution to the problem of induction. It is a solution that the Australian philosopher David Armstrong has also proposed independently at virtually the same time-Armstrong presenting it in his 1983 book What is a Law of Nature?, Foster in his 1983 paper to the Aristotelian Society entitled `Induction, Explanation, and Natural Necessity'. Armstrong and Foster are at opposite ends of the metaphysical spectrum. Armstrong is the foremost modern champion of total materialism. Foster is one of the few modern defenders of a Cartesian conception of the mind; and, more exotically, Foster combines this mind-body dualism with an idealist view of the physical world (though claim is not developed in the context of this book). Both Armstrong and Foster find it amusing, and in a sense reassuring, that, with such contrasting metaphysical outlooks, they manage to converge on the same view in this understanding of induction and natural law.
Now this proposed solution to the problem of induction involves accepting the existence of laws of nature, and it involves recognizing these laws not just
as regularities in the behavior of things (consistencies in how the world works in different places and times), but as forms of natural necessity-as laws whose obtaining ensures that things behave and interact in certain regular ways. It is this that brings the discussion to its third stage in Foster's argument. Foster demonstrates that accepting the existence of laws of this kind, though facilitating a solution to the problem of induction, creates its own problem. The problem it creates is simply that, given the kind of necessity these laws involve, it is hard to see how to make sense of such laws-how the relevant notion of a law can be considered coherent.
It is in relation to this new problem that, in the fourth and final phase of the discussion, Foster constructs an argument for the existence of God. For he argues that, given the problem of unintelligibility or lack of coherence, one can only achieve a satisfactory account of the of the coherence of laws if we entertain that there is a God of the relevant (broadly Jewish and Christian) type, and that it is God who is the creator of the natural world and the source of its laws. With the argument for theism in place, Foster concludes the discussion by looking again at the issue of induction, and showing how his earlier proposal needs to be reworked, in certain key respects, in response to the theistic necessity of holding moral and natural law. Foster's arguments, if one is able to follow them, may bolster faith and might seems irrelevant to those with nonthestic neutrality.

About the Author
Ph.D., University of Minnesota, 1980. Major research and teaching interests include public policy, budgeting, state politics and research methodology. Berry’s primary areas of interest are public policy, American state politics, and research methodology. Throughout his career, his work has focused on explaining why governments make the policy choices they do, and improving the methodologies available for studying policy making. Among his current research projects are analyses of the impact of electoral competition on the policy choices made by state legislators, and the effect of state welfare policy on poverty in the United States. Berry’s current research on methodology focuses on the development of techniques for estimating econometric models with binary dependent variables, and methods for studying policy diffusion using geographical information systems. Berry has also been working for several years collecting data on outcomes of all state legislative elections in the U.S. since the 1960s; he has begun to use these data to study the behavior of challengers in state legislative elections, and the role of partisan and incumbent protection goals in determining the nature of redistricting in state legislatures.

Its sterngth is in the examples

I've owned a copy of Berry's Understanding Regression Assumptions for ten years, but I didn't get around to reading it until a few days ago. Better late than never, I suppose, but Berry's text would have been an invaluable adjunct to any of the more complete regression/econometrics texts -- Gujarati, Wooldridge, Wittink -- I've used for teaching multiple regression in years past.

It's easy to list the assumptions, explain the consequences of their violation, and provide corrective procedures to assure that OLS regression provides BLUE estimates of slopes. It's a good deal more difficult, however, to identify and explain concrete circumstances that give rise to violation of assumptions in the first place. Sure, mis-specification is easy, at least in principle: variables that should be in the equation are, those that should not be are not, and funtional forms of all relationships are correct. But providing specific examples that illustrate violation of even this most fundamental of assumptions requires a good deal of work on the part of an instructor who wants to do the job right.

Futhermore, when we get past the conceptually easier issues and have to provide examples of circumstances that generate, say, heteroscedasticity or serial correlation with cross-sectional data, the task of making these ideas concrete becomes much more demanding. Only a practiced hand who has attended to these issues in purposeful fashion will be able to provided illustrations which will attune students to the conditions that are likely to cause essential assumptions to be violated.

Berry's book is replete with examples that make the usual OLS regression assumptions real and easy to remember, rather than leaving them as odd-sounding abstractions that we memorize and take on faith as essential to best use of OLS estimators. I'm retiring at the end of this semester, so maybe better late than never doesn't really apply after all. Still I'm glad I finally got around to reading this fine book.

Delivers all that's hoped

While equation heavy at times, after reading this book one gains a great deal of understanding as to the weaknesses/boundary conditions for inference of OLS regression. For those with little understanding of the basic mechanics of regression, this is NOT a good starting place, but those with some working knowledge this book is invaluable.

Zbrush and Anatomy bible!!!CD solution!

Hey there!

I don't have enough words to describe what this book is! Where should I start? The book is perfectly structured! The way Scott Spencer is explaining is not dumbed down like you see on some learning sources, but in the same time is clear as tear drop. He is not wasting any word, instead he manages to touch upon every aspect you might think of. While reading some chapters, certain questions were poping in my mind, but every and each of them were answered eventually later in the book.
The videos are made in the same manor. Clear, on spot, supporting you with everything he can (models, Ztools, reference images, proportions literately drawned by him ready for you to take them into Maya or Zbrush with you while you build your base mesh and many many more).
All in all, I must reiterate this, it is the bible you need when you start learning Zbrush and modeling. It is a resource that you will use to start with and, I'm sure, you will get back to later on just to use as a reference to whatever you might sculpt.
Now, the DVD issue. I know some people complained about Sybex quality on the DVD... I share your opinion in some way but I found a solution and it worked for me without any problem. Here is what I did: Inserted the DVD, opened the autoplay, clicked on Chapter 1 which opened a window with the files allocated for the given chapter. I selected them and copied in a folder on my hard disk. After this, I did the same with everything. When I was done copying all of them, I extracted the files on every chapter and there it was: good to go and being on my hard there was no waiting time what so ever. I saw some guy complaining about the sound... There is no sound issue! So if you find this problem than it has to do with your codecs (TIP: use VLC player since I find it to have a higher max volume than BsPlayer or Windows Media Player. Usually at 60% in VLC is louder than 100% in BsPlayer.).
The last bit, I recommend everything Scott Spencer did. I also got his other 2 books and they are the same. Start with this one since this is the foundation you need in sculpting and than move ahead and continue with the other 2 books. On top of this, if you can find his Zbrush 4 Introduction from Gnomon Workshop you won't regret. I watched it quite late, after I was already quite familiar with the program and it still showed me quite a lot of things I didn't know.
The only problem I have? A negative side of what Scott Spencer did? He has only 3 books out... He is only one...

P.S: Subjects touched in his books that I could not find in other resources or I couldn't find a decent way to understand them:

6) A logic way of explaining STRUCTURE and why is so important (or in other words, how to avoid a lumpy look when you sculpt) and the other two most important considerations when sculpting: Gesture and Proportion - ZBrush Digital Sculpting Human Anatomy
7) Small techniques that are implied in various places but no one is bothering with explaining them in an elaborate manor and even further, demonstrate their utility - ZBrush Digital Sculpting Human Anatomy

Good book but do not order Kindle edition!

This book appears to be excellent. However I realized as soon as I opened it that I made a serious mistake ordering the Kindle edition. The book is quite dependent on the CD that comes with the paper edition, and there is no web site to separately download the CD files. Thus you pay almost as much as the hard copy and lose much of the functionality.

a must have

This book is an excellent follow up to all previous zbrush books. Why?, two reasons...One, it refers to zbrush version 3.5 which has some major changes from previous zbrush versions. But the greatest joy is in following the tutorial of a "realistic hero" character. My lady friend always asks me about all other zbrush books..."why do all the characters look ugly?" the answer is simple. It's far easier to create an alien or an ogre. But now Scott Spencer enables us non academically educated artists to create a somewhat life-like character. This is no easy task, but Mr. Spencer enables even a non artist like myself to do so. I no longer have to create aliens and ogres and can actually create a character that is aesthetic to the layperson's eye! BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF ZBRUSH IS A MUST! So keep that in mind. But once you understand the zbrush interface and you are comfortable with the basic standard, clay, inflate, and flatten brushes, you will love this book. Hopefully, the next version will be of a "life-like" female superhero.

THIS BOOK IS A MUST HAVE along with "The Essential" by an author who now advocates mudbox. ZSpheres have come a long way with v.3.5 zspheres2 so he might regret leaving zbrush. BTW...There is no info on zsketching in this new Scott Spencer book, but nevertheless, your skills will grow leaps and bounds as an artist (digital sculpturist) as he does a great job explaining gesture and form as well as detail.

A Must Have for Divination

This is a wonderful book for people who like to make their own runes. I have made my own set of runes using this book as a guideline. The materials are very easy to come by, cheap to make, and easy to read. You get the freedom to personalize the runes with your own paint color choices and design styles. You pick stones that "speak" to you and sizes and shapes that "feel" right.
I have used Norse runes made of wood,antler and bone. If you a purist, and want to "make your own" but do not have the equipment or,worse yet, the patience, money and time to do an authentic wood rune set, the stone runes are a blessing. These runes actually seem have more energy-in my opinion.
The interpretations are easy to follow. The spreads are not complicated. This is a bare bones book that anyone can pick up and use. You can even use the basic instructions to pick a stone to make as your own charm or,if you have a holed stone, make your own talisman.

Simply the best

Quite simply, this is the best general purpose computing book I have ever read. It would say it is absolute essential for A-level students, but also has an awful lot to offer anyone else, as this will act as a superb reference book for many years to come. If you are studying computing in any form, then you are doing yourself an injustice by not owning this superb book....

The previous few reviews (5 as of now) I read does not do justice to this book. I suppose Singapore is a small nation so a review about this book impact is not well expounded. But now, in the year 2015, there is no more computer science subject in Singapore JC . Myself been in the IT for the past 8 years and facing shrinking space in my room, I have to let go of texts since they can be purchase if ever needed. Otherwise, it is the knowledge/wisdom…which is what remains after one forgotten much.
