David Swenson began the practice of yoga in 1969 at the age of 13. He found Ashtanga in 1973 through David Williams. In 1974 K. Pattabhi Jois made his first trip to the US and David began studies directly with him at that time. He then traveled to Mysore, India in 1977 and learned the entire system in it's original form. David is recognized today as one of the foremost authorities of Ashtanga Yoga.

Excellent Guide to Ashtanga

I have purchased several Ashtanga yoga books, but this one by far is THE BEST! This book gets five stars for being user friendly, especially during practice. Each asana is described in detail, with variations to fit your level, also at the end of the book is just photos of the series. There are also modified time versions for those who are not able to do the full primary and intermediate series )i.e 15 minutes, 30 minutes, etc..) What is truly beneficial is you never have to worry about the pages flipping, as this book is wired bound. A great book, that you will get great mileage out of. David Swenson's passion for Ashtanga Yoga really shines through, and is inviting to the practitioner, and not intimidating. Clear and concise. Great illustrations and instructions on each pose.

Best home practice guide

I am pursuing ashtanga yoga quite seriously, and this is the only book out there that is really helpful as a self-guide when you want to practice on your own. My issue is that I don't always remember the order of the postures and all the things you need to pay attention to when I practice on my own. This manual is great for the following reasons:

- It's a binder book so pages are easy to flip
- Each position in the series is shown visually in a variety of levels: the final level to aim for, and the "easier" levels to aim for if you are not there yet. This makes the book very safe and appropriate for beginners. And also less discouraging.
- In addition to the full photos of the above, you get step by step procedures and transitions, as well as guidelines on what to work on while you are in the position.

Downsides: I wish it was less heavy and came in color. Ideally there should be a Kindle version for traveling and audio playlist for each position, so that you can practice on the go. Right now the book is too heavy to travel with.

One of the two best yoga books ever!

This is by far one of the two best Power/Ashtanga Yoga books out there. The other one is Power Yoga by Beryl Bender Birch. Both books detail basically the same ashtanga sequence and both go into great detail on everything you need to know as far as all the nuances of the different poses and breathing techniques. There are superb photo demonstrations of each and every pose, along with alternatives to each pose depending on your skill level. I use this book, especially the detailed descriptions of the two Sun Salutations (A&B) each and every day in my personal practice. I also just purchased the new first series DVD from David Swenson and found it to be absolutely amazing and detailed, just like this book. The binding of this book makes it perfect for use during your practice as it allows the pages to open up and lay flat on the floor next to you. The foldouts available on his website are also very useful for your practice. Overall, I would highly recommend this book for beginners and advanced practitioners alike.

So disappointing . . .

Hoped to find the film script adaption by Gore Vidal and Tennessee Williams of the Tennessee Williams' play, "Suddenly Last Summer". Unfortunately, this is NOT it. Missing the opening scent with the wonderful lines from Hepburn as she descends from the elevator chair and the superb coda to the final sequence of the film. Not sure why this isn't available. Perhaps, internecine rivalry between the Williams and Gore estates? Boo-hoo.

Ins Choi is an actor and playwright. His first play, Kim's Convenience, won Best New Play and the Patron's Pick Award at the 2011 Toronto Fringe Festival, and launched Soulpepper Theatre's 2012 season to a sold-out run and rave reviews. He lives in Toronto.

Great play

I saw this play in Toronto, and wished for about the hundredth time that San Francisco could not only put on plays like this but get the actors to do so. Wonderfully written, smart, funny, moving, and timely, this play really made me laugh and think. With so many Korean as well as other immigrant students in my classrooms, I'm ordering it so I can consider teaching it in my college literature courses. There are some very specific Toronto issues (easily solved with a city map and a Toronto discussion)but the bigger issues will apply to many.

This popular textbook offers a comprehensive and practical introduction to central themes in the principles and practice of teaching English as a foreign/second language. It is written both for teachers and for those taking professional courses in English language teaching.

The first part is focused on the principles on which current methods and materials are based and explores such topics as educational frameworks, the communicative approach, post-communicative trends in syllabus and materials design, and the evaluation and adaptation of materials. Part II relates these principles to individual language skills. It shows how theories concerned with the development of reading, speaking, listening and writing have affected the design and use of teaching materials. The final part of the book examines different methods available to teachers for organizing and managing the ELT classroom, and discusses group and pair work, individualization, classroom observation and the teacher's role in the contemporary ELT context.

This second edition incorporates a number of new sections, including task-based learning, the use of the Internet, and teacher research. The background references have been extensively updated, and new samples from current teaching materials are included.

About the Author
Jo McDonough is Senior Lecturer in ELT in the Department of Language and Linguistics at the University of Essex. She is the author of ESP in Perspective (1984) and Research Methods for English Language Teachers (with Steven McDonough, 1997).

Christopher Shaw is Senior Teaching Fellow in the English Language Teaching Centre at the University of Essex. His research interests include teaching English for academic purposes.

A Very Important Book, A Very Important Artist

This book is a much appreciated addition to the available writings on Joseph Beuys. Mesch and Michely have succeeded in providing a context for studying the work of Beuys. This has been an elusive task for any student of Beuys, due to the wide variety of projects that he pursued and the manipulations of his media persona. 'Joseph Beuys: The Reader' is beautifully organized to be very helpful in undertaking the vast difference of opinion of a vast and sometimes seemingly disconnected art practice. The six sections that divide the book each address a central issue concerning Beuys art practice and his relationship to art history. These topical sections, rather than a chronological or biographical organization (which is the norm according to the introduction), allow the reader to much more easily make comparisons and contrasts between the individual essays. As well, each essay offers some of the best writing on Beuys, focusing on his artwork rather than his legend.

This book is a fundamental for any person who is interested in understanding the work (and myth) of Joseph Beuys.
